Default Jaw Popping. Symptom of Lock-Jaw? PLEASE HELP!

Hi everyone, I've been having this chronic popping in my jaw for the past 4-6 months and I'm started to get worried. When I first told a dentist (not sure if that's even the right person to go to), he told me that my jaw was just getting sore, just like when other bones get worked too hard, it pops at times. But I mean, it's been occuring for over 150 days now. I can open my mouth about 60-70% of the way, but once I attempt to stretch it open to its maximum, I meet some restriction from my jaw. And it begins to hurt as I try to force it open more, until it just pops and my jaw opens to its maximum. It's hard to even eat something that's about 1 1/2" in vertical diameter because it would hurt trying to open my mouth up that wide. I'm starting to have concerns and would take this to the doctor but I rather go to H-T members first, hoping that maybe there are some of you who are or knows someone that are doctors, that may be able to find some free advice, tips, or even clues/guesses as to what this chronic popping in my jaw might be. I don't want to have symptoms of lock-jaw and not know it until I wake up one day and I can't open my mouth ... So yeah, any help would be much appreciate...

P.S. - If anyone knows a doctor who they highly recommend in or around San Francisco/the Bay Area, please PM me, or post their name, contact number, and location so I can have them inspect this issue of mine.

Thanks before-hand to all H-T members who helps.

my girfriend has this problem. Once she tried to open her mouth as far as it would go, and it got stuck open. ever since then shes had a popping feeling and almost a grinding sensation. i would talk to an orthadontist, i bet they would know more about the jaw than a dentist.

It's TMD/TMJ. The medical term is Temporomandibular Disorder. You dont seem to have symptoms of Tetanus (aka lock-jaw). Just to be sure, get a tetanus test. If that comes out negative, you have TMD/TMJ (which ever you want to call it.)

Tetanus? He would know because his back would be broken in like 10 places... Way to suggest wasting some more health care dollars.

The best advice is to eat really soft foods for awhile; ie. don't eat bagels, meat, etc. It will get better, just give it some time.

I have this symptom probably 3-4 times throughout the year. I never knew it was something common.

What do you mean by this? Broken back? I'm lost here....

Also, I'll attempt to eat softer food for a while and see how it reacts...

Since only about 40 people nationwide get Tetanus per year, I doubt it's that.

dude i have this problem too, well sorta like yours. the right side of my jaw clicks/cracks when i open it... it doesnt hurt it just makes a clicking/cracking noise when opening it. it kinda feels like the joint pops out and then pops back in. it only does it on the right side (my right).

i went to a dentist like 8 months ago and he said if it doesnt hurt, then dont worry about it and that it will go away eventually :S... but its been doing it for two years now, i've just ignored it...

sucks when ur making out, sometimes i gotta move my jaw around to open my mouth more... and then girl is like "what are u doing?" probably thinking its my first time, such a noob! lol

but yea it really sucks when ur eating too, always makes the clicking sound when i bite. oh well i might see a doctor soon.

its TMJ, ive had it forever but luckily for me no pain, if it hurts a lot then you should have something done about it, a doctor will tell u to goto a dentist, so i say find a new dentist, u can try massaging where the jaw meets the skull up by your ears, that may help a little, otherwise its surgery for u...

I have the same problem. TMJ is a practice looked down upon by mosts dentists and orthodontists. Dental insurance doesn't even cover it because they feel its so bogus. The only insurance that covers it I think is medical insurance, and then its only like $2000 for your entire life.

Go see an orthodontist, chances are you will need braces, because I have to get mine again

I meant that if you have tetanus you'd be feeling it. Your lock-jaw would be unbearable, and all your muscles would be flexed so hard that you would most likely break a bunch of bones in your back. It's not something you could have around for 150 days; you'd kill yourself long before then. This is why medical advice on honda-tech is bad. You have people with no medical knowledge suggesting ridiculous things..

The soft food works; try it.

I got braces and I had to use these rubber bands to move my jaw over. I choose that over operation due to the fact I wouldnt have been able to eat for long periods at a time and I wasa really under weight. So I chose the braces. But either of these may not be your best option.
There is a TMJ specalist in houston called Ronals Avenshine and he is like the expert on it. He fought the insurance company to get it covered. Anyhow he made the retainer that gave me a fake bite. I also had/have an under developed jaw too.

Just out of curiosity how much did your TMJ specialists charge? I went to get a quote and he quoted me $3300 just to get my mouth back to normal, then I would have to get braces again. I said no thank you and went back to my orthodontist and told him he should have done it right the first time and to fix my mouth.
