Default iPhone Multi SIM Functions

Has anybody moved to an iPhone XS or XS Max?

The multi-SIM function is interesting.

You can have several phone numbers and plans that are uploaded via QR code to eSIM, in addition to a physical SIM.

Whatever plan is on the eSIM is the data plan. You don't have to have a physical SIM at all, but if you do the plan on the eSIM and the plan on the physical SIM are active at the same time, and the phone will show you two different provider names and signal strength meters.

You cannot have two eSIM active at the same time, but it's very easy to do something like turn off your work plan's eSIM, turn on your second plan and go on with life.

There's an English language Hong Kong market XS Max with two physical SIM in one tray, but the eSIM functionality seems more interesting, if you ask me. :-)

Time off? Maybe you don't want to deal with your work number all the time.

Travel/commute a lot? Maybe you want two different providers on the same iPhone, in order to cover an area that's poor signal with one provider or the other.

No.

You're never, never going to use an iPhone for serious crime.

If I told you why, it'd only start an argument. :-)

Yeah, Nextel was the jam for drug dealing.

George, can I have a sim for my work phone and personal phone in at the same time and both will receive calls and messages? Or I have to switch back and forth between sims?

If you have one as an eSIM and one as a physical SIM, then yes. In that case both will be active at the same time and you will show two signal strengths.

Both will receive calls and use SMS.

Only one of them will be able to use iMessages and data.

Interested in hearing why

I would think iMessage would be a reason to use it for serious crime, if one felt the need to text about their crimes.

OK that's cool. I'd very much like to stop carrying around 2 phones.

You might have an issue getting work to sign off on this idea. Or, if they do, then you might need to give work control of your personal phone.

I hated carrying around 2 phones, so I know the feeling.

Indeed, we use Meraki for MDM and IDK how that would work on a multi sim phone.

I actually handle most of the MDM, so I'd be signing off myself, I don't think that's an issue.

Are any US service providers offering eSIM support yet? I thought this was the biggest issue with this supposed "function" currently. I know as of a couple weeks ago there were some providers working on it but no set release date or confirmed support. Keep your burners for now guys...

AT&T has stocked physical blue cards with QR codes, but they've instructed personnel not to distribute them yet.

T-Mobile says they'll be able to distribute eSIM via the T-Mobile iOS application by the end of the year [sic]. This is strange because I just happen to know that you can get a QR code from T-Mobile in Prague.

Meanwhile, a lot of little providers will get you a QR code or give you the numbers you need, no problem at all. I don't know what's slowing down the big three unless it's something to do with system integration and getting the apps approved.

Some people are viewing this askance and hinting it's a proprietary Apple thing, but I see a lot of potential in having several eSIM in a single device.

What’s so hard about just swapping sims out? Drug dealers and cheaters have been doing this for years.

But yeah I would be interested too except I don’t travel much. Just using google voice number

because you can't use both at the same time?

Having dual sims purpose is so the user does not need to carry two phones. Many people out there would love to separate their business calls from their personal calls using two different numbers but don't want to carry around two phones.

Also law enforcement can track you via IMEI, so not sure why drug dealers are swapping out sims.

the point of a burner is so you canít be tracked, if you use the same imei over and over with different sims, regardless if prepaid or postpaid sim, you can still be tracked
