Default Family Separation: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver

Very good piece on the family separation policy that the current administration has put into place. NSFW due to language

I think this may be the best piece John Oliver has ever done.

Agreed. I generally like his show and his points, but this one was really good and tough to watch at times.

Ok let me make myself more clear, I don't want them coming in. We aren't the world police to help everyone fix your own **** before ours ends up just as broken.

It's already getting there

Not letting them in and not stealing their children are two separate issues. We can do one without doing the other.

Yeah, it's the typical liberal hit piece that uses people's statements in context.

It should have never happened in the first place and there is nothing in place to prevent it from happening again. This is especially true with the rhetoric coming from a certain administration surrounding the migrant caravan.

It never really stopped and many of the kids taken from their families will never be reunited.

And for those that didn't watch to the end, the administration is already signaling that they'll return to the policy after the election.

Can't watch at work, but does he go into why we should keep them together when they know they are violating the laws of our country? Should we also start allowing people in prison (actual citizens) to have their spouse and kids with them too?

I wonder if I took my family and tried to sneak into another country (with a huge border patrol presence because it's a serious problem) if we'd all be kept together...

He does go into that. Particularly about how crossing the border is a misdemeanor that carries no prison time. That kind of makes that comparison moot.

Admit it. You just like seeing kids taken from their families. There's no need for your mental gymnastics. Just say what's on your mind. What are you afraid of?

Don't Ross me bro. Although it is rather fun seeing folks in here get their hackles up when certain nuggets are dropped. It's not like there could actually be a serious conversation about topics like this anyway.

I think the key is also that seeking asylum is not a crime. And the fact that this administration directs asylum seekers to ports of entry (even though that's not actually required) and then refuses them entry, resulting in them just sitting at the border for months.

It's easier to just pound our chests and push the narrative that they're just coming here because they hate our freedom and want to destroy America.

Asylum or employment opportunity? That seems to be the argument the latter which doesn't give them a right to simply country hop. I'm also confused because they will be essentially be poor in America for the rest of their lives at the tax payer's expense. So what opportunity are they missing?

Serious question...did we break their ****? It seems America historically screwed over every poor country thus is solely reasonable for the impoverished world.

Bear with me .....Cuba for example....Fulgencio Batista was ''friendly'' to the U.S. and then Castro seized power...that didn't work out for the Cuban people. Not saying Batista's regime was legit for Cuban but my point is it goes both ways doesn't?
