Default eScooter rentals....wtf happened...how did we get here?

So Tampa has just gotten these escooter rentals about 2-4 weeks ago. A part of me wants to try them, another part of me thinks you look like a douche on them.

Bicycle rentals has been around for a few years, probably more than 5 at this point. i love them, i grew up riding bikes all day so I'm a little biased.

These escooters are hub-less unlike the bikes. So these means that you can find one or a bunch just ******* laid down all over the place. When I went to Nashville, these are ******* everywhere like trash.

How did we get here? wtf happened? I never owned a razor scooter nor did i want one, how tf are there multiple companies offering these things? Will they go away in a few years?

Thoughts?

These are all over the place in Baltimore.

Was visiting my grandmother this weekend and saw some kid just ghost ride it into the street and leave it.

I rode them a few times & thought they were pretty fun, but people will ruin it. Haven't seen them in Chicago at all, but I might just be oblivious.

They are so cheaply made that they pay for themselves after a few days of service. The company doesn't give two ***** what happens to them and never bother to service them. People can sign up to be 'chargers' and the company pays them for each unit they charge.

People do get paid to service these as well as charging them. I don't see a problem with having these, especially around the city where parking is a nightmare. Some locals here knock them down out of hatred but I can't tell what aspects of the community these scooters are ruining.

Hmmm, a few scooters laying on the ground in front of a toy store, it must be a similar issue everywhere!

They're a blast to drive around on and I really enjoy scooting around. Super cheap to hop on one at Bar #1 and scoot a half mile to Bar #2 for $1

The problems (IMO) are the following though:

- There are like five different competing brands now (Bird, Lime, Bolt, Spin, and one other I can't think of) so the market is flooded with them trying to compete
- People don't wear safety gear with them
- Are they bikes? Are they cars? Can they go on the sidewalk? People just hop on and completely disregard traffic signals and walkways and do whatever

This is where it gets interesting in both provider programming and local laws. In Tampa, they are not allowed to be ridden on the street. In Nashville, they are. From the article on Jalopnik, in Santa Monica, they are not allowed on bike lanes (per city) and some of the provider wont let you ride it in one and others are more lax.

It's a **** show

I know in CA, if you get caught riding while drunk, you’ll get a DUI.

I get your point, but they need to figure it out. Im all for transportation like this. Problem is, it's usually a day drinking Chad in a soft topped backward baseball hat, drunk, and weaving in and out of the sidewalk to the street, flying through intersections etc.

Yes, that is a major issue...not to mention they are annoying for people who actually use the sidewalk like runners, kids on bikes, and people walking their dog on a leash. NPR had a very good story on these scooters and they are EXTREMELY unsustainable and only last roughly 2 months max when they are technically economically viable if they last 6+ months or longer. Seattle actually has a similar problem with bikes just laying around everywhere.

If cities were serious about these, they should provide more dedicated bike/electric scooter lanes so that people can get around safely, not mess the sidewalk up, and incentivize people to drive less. I see none of that actually happening and these are just a band-aid solution to poor urban design/traffic.
