Default Escape from the Mayo Clinic

This article is a bit long but worth it.

https://www.cnn.com/2018/08/13/healt...ise/index.html

Cliffs: 18 year old girl has an aneurism on Christmas Day and is taken to the Mayo clinic. The doctors there initially saved her life but as her recovery continued (for months) the family became increasingly dissatisfied with the care she was receiving and asked the hospital to transfer her somewhere else. In response, the hospital banned family members from seeing her or even being in the building while they went to court to try and gain guardianship over her. The family then broke her out of the Mayo clinic, were chased by the police across state lines until they took her to a hospital in Sioux Falls. That hospital treated her with medication and sent her home, which forced the cops to stand down because it was now an issue of differing medical opinions.

One year later she is a HS graduate and attending college. Looks like mayo might be facing a pretty big lawsuit too.

Hospitals pull some surprisingly shady BS, which I was unaware of until this year. Hopefully they can sue and get a ton of money. I still find it appalling that one can become a CEO of a hospital, that seems wrong.

Mayo responded with a letter stating that CNNís reporters left out fact to sell the story. They also claim they suspected child abuse, hence not wanting to release to her parents.

Should be an interesting battle.

Mayo has responded, and CNN fired back. Because I live in the home of the Mayo Clinic, and many people I know work there(including my wife), I was linked to this story as soon as it dropped.

Right away some things seemed off about the story. Even the mother's side of the story made her sound a bit crazy. I wasn't surprised to find out she had tested positive for meth use.

On the other hand, there are many ways that it appears Mayo didn't handle this very well.

Really, it seems like there were problems on all sides, and as usual the truth is somewhere in the middle.

I’m trying to understand Mayo’s motivation for requesting guardianship. Ego? Insurance money? Granted I only have the CNN article to go by, but other than the mother and family pissing off staff I don’t see much justification.

IIRC, they tried to make her a ward of the state due concerns of abuse from the parents. Details:

Hospitals are a business as much as a place of healing. Doctors aren't business men.

Unless we 100% socialize medicine somebody has to run the hospital.

The highest paid individuals in both healthcare and education are the administrators. Which leads to all kinds of problems.

hands off on this topic, all I can say is Mayo should've just let her go. If there were any signs of abuse it should've been noted and to let the police investigate.

Reminds me of Unsane, where the loonie bin holds everyone until their insurance stops paying them money.

That's not necessary. I think he's making the point that hospitals should be more socialist than capitalist since healthcare is viewed as a human right to roughly half of the country. Right or wrong, there's nothing stupid about it. I disagree, but only because I got the distinct pleasure of needing medical attention in a socialized medicine country, and I wasn't happy with the level of service. Like anything else, you get what you pay for, money attracts professionals, promulgates competition, and sets a higher standard for care all together. Socialized medicine turns healthcare into the DMV, dirty, poorly run facilities, where you are just a number, and the level of competence is low.

Yeah, you might be misunderstanding Scottie.

He's looking at it from a hippocratic oath point of view, in which one should not be thinking of financials in regards to another's health and well being.
