Default Engine Swap: Is it REALLY worth it?

When you factor in the cost and the wrenching time (although many of us LOVE wrench time) is an engine swap really worth the time and money? Please discuss.

What engine swap in what car? Spending $5K to gain 30whp? No. Spending $4K to more than double your hp swapping from a 302 to a 460 in a 67 mustang fastback? Hell yes.

I love my swap. It's not the fastest, it's not the best, it's not the most furious but I'm very happy with it. The only thing I regret is not getting the Big Brother of the B series.

Defintley worth swaaping in.

Going from 60crank hp to 170 hp was defintley worth the $2500

Depends on how you look at it.. if you are getting a swap because the existing motor in your engine blew or is going to blow up then yes why not spend an extra couple grand for about 30-40 more hp, more torque, and better gearing.. not to mention an engine that works. If you are swapping out your brand new or nearly new engine that came with the car for the extra power.. i'd still say its worth it but not AS worth it.. if that makes sense.. And of course the final senario is if you are planning on using this as a fulltime racecar then its not only worth it but it is neccesary thing to do. All IMO of course

See... maybe I'm not enough of a gear head because I've never had an engine that is "going to blow up".

I think thats kind of pushing it. I swapped out my cx motor (had a blown head) for a b16a, costed me $2500 total, and now i have about 2 1/2 times horsepower. The only swap i can see costing $5k and only gaining 30whp would be a type r swap into a gs-r, but then you could still turn around and sell the gs-r swap for a few G's.

I dont think this question was geared towards the rednecks

I was just making up those numbers guys. FYI, my car's original engine was rated at 180hp. The engine I have in there now I have about $3K total in, and it's making over 450.

I would say so, especially if you planned on keeping your car anyways. ight as well put a fresh motor in, along with a little more HP's.

The 460 is too heavy. Supercharged 302 with rollercam, and elderbrock heads

depends on the car. on soem cars turbo makes more sense for the money. id say the best swap is sr20det into an 89 240sx....that engine has a LOT of potential.

i dont' think it's worth it for me, i have a b18b integra and the only upgrades are the b18c and b18c5, both would cost a bundle and while they would give me good numbers, i'm not sure it's worth it, especially since i could do a turbo for less than either swap and be making more power

Maybe the difference is I'm one to do non-major work on a car... I prefer to not turbo what wasn't intended to be turbo and not swap things. Bolt-ons are more my taste.

In which case you could sell your b16 for 2k... soooo 3k for 30whp and an lsd (oooh and a red valve-cover)? I think it might be worth it...

It's still a $5k swap that gives you 30hp.

I see where he's coming from... the swap itself cost $5k. (i.e. you need $5k in cash to do it) It's the aftermath that helps make some of the money back.

Ha. A 302 with a blower will weigh damn close to what a 460 with aluminum heads/intake weighs -- especially if you're talking about an EFI 302 setup. Of course, that 429/460 block can easily be stroked out to about 557cid. My brother just bought a 90 notch with a bolt-on 302 blower motor (GT40s, 6psi paxton -- really mild combination). It doesn't have the grunt of my all motor much wilder 351. It would take one serious 302 with a ton of boost to match the grunt of a built BBF.
