Default Cover Letter Length

I'm writing a thoughtful, unconventional cover letter for a great job opportunity.

Try as I might, I can't make it fit on one MS Word page.

Those of you in recruiting/hiring positions (outside of IT/engineering), do you lose interest in a letter longer than 1 electronic page? No matter how well-written? (this is for a writing/editing job)

The last cover letter I wrote which enabled me to obtain my current position was 1.5 pages long and single spaced. I put everything I have into it.

One page man. You want to grab their interest and leave them wanting more to get you in the door for the interview. HR people are going to be bombarded with applicants and they probably will not take the time to read all of them, so you want to reach out and get their attention as quick as possible. They are not the decision makers either so no need to go out of your way to impress them with a potential TL,DR letter.

Try as I might, I can't make it fit on one MS Word page.
If you must go over, then go over. Don't stress over it.

Good luck

Right now it looks OK. It's a whole page plus one paragraph and the signature.

Do I really need to cut it down more?

Have you shared it with anyone for their input? Maybe do that and see what they say.

Or if it's something you just wrote, let it sit a day and come back to it.

I recently had to write a best man speech that at first draft I thought was ok, then after a day or so, I just hacked it up and went with something that was much shorter and told a better story.

Thank you. To be perfectly honest with you, I tend to find so many of the norms/conventions that exist these days are just that. Literally put into writing everything in your background and what's relevant, while making it as concise and direct as possible. There is no perfect length, but if you truly want it, you need to articulate just that and prove to them your background is what they need.

I do spatial analysis for the government.

Awesome. Congrats.

The thing I'm "putting my all" into isn't my quallies. It's my viewpoint on the particular issue that this non-profit deals with. I think I'm in a unique position to understand the threat their constituency is under and I am writing about that.

One page. Most recruiters that I have worked with previously spend 15-30 seconds max because of the volume they get.

I took a couple hits of the blunt and calmed down. I don't work in HR but I have the ability to view everything that goes on over there. Went through about 50 cover letters, salary ranging from $50k-$200k. The lower tier ones were mostly a half a page to 3/4 of a page. The upper tier positions were mostly a full page with a signature in ink at the bottom. Not sure if they actually read them but the half page ones on the surface look like a 7th grader prepared it.....

btw are you busy Friday night?

Thank you! Actually there is a job opening right now that I'm going to apply for which would be the biggest career advancement, move up in my life. I'm going to do the same and apply to it before Friday.

I would just be brutally honest and articulate that point then - people resonate well with that and it's refreshing in this day in age.

No but close.

The difference is that everyone hates these guys. Far right and far left. It's the perfect fit for where I am right now after my neoconservative drift on foreign policy.

I'm on the one page train....but I guess I'd have to see it and how it's formatted, etc.

For lower level positions, I would not go longer than 1/3 of a page. Often the number of candidate is 80. Don't make me hate you already if you are making me read any more.

I assume OP is at a higher lever. I would go no more than 3/4 of a page. You may be 1 out of 20, and I have a bit more time to read. But still Control F is my friend.

Most people I know who seem to know these things say one page, but they've never made it out to be a deal-breaker.

Make it short, I wouldn't even fill up half a page. Do your best to figure out what your value proposition is and how it aligns to the objectives/mission statement of the firm in addition to the position itself.

Sucks having to fluff yourself up, if it's something that you really want it may help to have somebody write it for you.

I agree with itrSteez.

I think a cover letter should be about half a page. Your actual resume should have more detail and highlight your strong points/accomplishments/certifications.

I can tell you that anything over half a page, I'm not really going to be reading carefully.
