Depends on the cow. But the better eating cows use a lot of resources. Still, all of those costs are passed down to consumers anyway.

True this.

As another reference, my family's ranch in SLO has had the lowest water table measurement ever. There are wineries all around and they take up a huge amount of water.

LOL that's what you think. Last year my parents house got cited for watering on the off day(night.) The citation was written out at 2:33AM.

Anybody else not turn on their sprinklers yet? I don't think I'm going to this year, if I do, it's going to be once a week. Don't really care to keep my crabgrass green if it's going to cost me more money. They're raising our rates on a 'tiered' program in order to keep us from using lots of water.

lol I'm thinking of replacing the small patch of front yard grass with some drought resistant landscaping, just to keep attention away from the lush several thousand square foot of green goodness in the back.

Gotta love having water at like 15' and a well in your backyard in modern suburbia.

No. Some of the GMOs currently being developed are actually more nutritious than the non-GMO crops.

Oh and for people saying they need to go after ag water, they are. So many cropland areas have been partially or completely fallowed.

Local irrigation districts are actually setting restrictions on how much water farmers are allowed to get, and last year they implemented (or tried to) implement a 'stock market' type water share system to where you could buy and sell shares to other farmers.

Other local districts were selling water to so-cal and other areas because it made them more money.

I also believe that farmers aren't allowed to catch and store rain water. Not sure if it is true in my area, but if it is, it has to be one of the stupidest laws in effect.

Cliffs:local fields are fallowed while so-cal lawns are green and decorative fountains are flowing.

For the even more budget strapped, they can drink out of the great lakes. Preferably downstream of Detroit around Lake Eerie.

would anyone want to live in so cal / las vegas / central valley / phoenix / surrounded by a natural landscape?

i agree with what your saying tho, just wish it were that easy.

i mean, simple things like allowing grey water and similar things would be a great first step.
how long til we get to be like rural Oz where everyone has rain water tanks, and they great each other not with "how you doin?" but with "hows your tanks?"

where i grew up we hauled all of our water there was no long showers or lawns. most view it as damn near 3rd world

yet per capita water use in the major cities and suburbs of southern california are down and have been down for years now.

besides all the lawn water in southern california would irrigate 3 almond trees in Merced, so what's the point?

this is pretty common in most of the west. with prior appropriation (the way water rights work in the west) you dont own the rainwater that falls on your property; its owned by those water rights owners downstream.*

*unless the water does damage to your property - then its your responsibility

can't believe you support Monsanto , and it's just not GMOs they create but how unethical they are when conducting business.

Does Ca. install water meters on properties to monitor water usage. For example when someone takes long showers how would they know how much water is being used?

I can assure you we'll be charging Californians a premium for our delicious fresh water since they've been calling us flyover states for years.

MON's highly questionable business practices, mostly.

You're a farmer with does not use MON seeds. Your neighbors do. If MON seeds migrate, as seeds are wont to do, onto your fields MON sends goons around testing grain deliveries and sues the **** out of you and intimidates you.

Then there's the highly shady international seed deals that MON is brokering.

Also yield is great but not when it's bolstered by drenching everything in **** tons of roundup.

Yes they do. I used to not be metered, about a year ago the popped one in and my flat rate bill went up about 15 bucks in the summer months. It's nice because in the winter months it drops 15 below my flat rate. 2 people in the house, big back yard, decent front yard. I had a garden last year too, but it was on a drip system, and I had no change in my bill, which was nice to see.

The farmer needs to sue Monsanto for polluting his organic, Non GMO crop.
