Uh, yeah, Toyota was totally aware of their little frame problem. They had a buy back program where if your frame failed a test (literally a tech just hitting your frame with a hammer), they would give you 1.5X the value of the truck in KBB excellent condition, regardless of the condition. They also offered something like $2-5,000 off a new truck if you bought one that same day.

Whoa

Looking at the trailer hitch and the vintage (90-95?), I'm gonna guess it's due to age and rust

Not sure what this story is, but apparently Toyota trucks have a lot of frame issues. Here is some more of the thread from my local forum:

Yes. My buddy got a check for over $11,000 from Toyota for his POS that was so rusted and beat up it looked like a $1,000 truck.

he traded a beat up neon for it (the truck owner wanted good MPG)
He then contacted toyota. Toyota was giving 150% value of truck in excellent condition, no matter what the condition of the truck was. Condition wise it looked like a pile of **** $1,000 truck. Excellent value was $7,XXX so he got just over $11,k for it. He said the dealer that had to inspect the frame was pissed.

The recall ended 12/31/12[/QUOTE]
...................................
Toyota bought back my old truck (99' I think) and gave me enough money and price cuts to buy a new one (2008 model) for some tiny amount, like $4000. Old truck was extra cab with manual door cranks 4cyl and the new one was 4 door V6 TRD model loaded.

I'm glad I didn't die from a broken truck, but in the end it was a bonus for me. They shelled out HUGE $$ to keep customers happy.

BTW the rusty spots on my truck were pretty small. The criteria was one spot rusted through I think 1/2" diameter. The tech poked a hole in the frame with his finger and they confiscated the truck, gave me a rental car and wrote me a big fat check.

This is not news. Anyone not aware of the problem and owned one of these trucks must have been living in a cave.

Since I owned an '03, I got a mailer last year for a class-action lawsuit against Toyota leading to reduced resale for those that did not need the frame work (mine did not). I joined, but I don't think it'll get me a significant amount of money after all the lawyer fees and such.

The rust preventer they used on the frames was actually acting as an accelerator, I think. That or it just sucked. It was the inside of the frame that would begin to rot out long before the outside. You could look under the truck and see a spotless frame that looks brand new, but you couldn't see the inside rotting out and tell you only had 1/8" steel left in some weak spots.

The lift arms are directly on the frame rails where they should be on a normal truck, but this is Toyota we're talking about. With a Tacoma, the sheet metal body is stronger than the frame.

god, was all the work in the frame replacement video even worth the hassle? looks like from a labor perspective that would have cost more than the truck was worth

Not as much as multiple lawsuits from people driving down the highway at 80mph when all of a sudden their ******* frame bends in half

There was like 4 possible outcomes for Tacoma owners;
1. Their frame passed the test and they didn't get anything
2. Their frame was okay, but they re-coated it
3. Their frame was bad, so they replaced it with a new one
4. Their frame was fucked, and they got 1.5X for their truck that same day

That's part of why I have extra distaste for Toyota they used to be good. Anytime something falls apart as a corporate system I get rustled, when I buy a pofs time bomb my jimmies are orbiting.

Yep. They also roll it together with all of the "accelerator" issues as well.

If America knows how to do one thing good, it's build a pickup truck. Why someone would get a Toyota or Nissan over a Ford/Chevy/Dodge is beyond me.

My truck fell under #1 just before the recall to the '03-04 was announced (mine was an '03). Before everything was about to hit the fan, I walked across the street and traded it in the same day for a Ridgeline and got a very fair value for it.
