Default Buy Nissan Leaf? WWHTGDDD????

There are currently some pretty hefty incentives being waved at me to buy an electric car.

My company is offering:

$10k towards the purchase of a Nissan Leaf
Free charging

The Federal Government is offering:

$7500 tax credit (I should be able to take full advantage of this).

Cost of vehicle is $35k with 240v charger. The wiring is in place and I could install it myself.

My current car is a 2000 ford taurus that still runs okay, but there are some looming maintenance issues that I would anticipate to be about $1k/year over the next 2 years.

It would only save me about $1000 per year in fuel at current prices, and I am sure the increase in insurance would eat up about $500 of that.

I have enough cash to pay cash, but since I can obtain financing through my credit union at around 2.5%, I will probably finance some of it to maintain liquidity.

So the way i see it, 35K-10K-7.5K=17.5K

is there a better car for 17.5K?
honda civic?

That is correct, $17.5k off of the MSRP of $35k.

although I wouldn't get the $7500 back from the government until April 2012

I honestly dont think there is a better car for 17.5k. This car has maximum fuel efficiency, and a pretty fancy navigation setup with remote start and the acceleration is pretty good as well.

What is that saying about glass houses again?

OP if you can swing it I say rock one. Good price for a car you don't have to pay a cent in fuel for.

Thats true, it is kind of....gay...for lack of a better word.

The Chevy volt that my boss has is way cooler, but its about $7500 more.

I'd do it, I drove the Leaf around for a few days and was really impressed. Just make sure, though--if you're going on a long trip (more than 45-50 miles IMO), be sure you can charge it wherever you're going.

Why the hell not!?

Especially if they are offering to pay you a large incentive to buy it, and they are offering to let you charge it at work and not waste your electricity.

I'm sure you'll still have to charge it at home too, but charging at work for 8 hrs a day would certainly help you.

And it's not like your giving up a car that is actually better or more fun to drive to begin with. I wouldn't get rid of a turbo'ed teg or civic, Sti, Evo, BMW, (insert your favorite brand of car here), but I would give up a taurus for this!

The Leaf is not 'gay', unless you mean "gay people are generally better with money, and not paying for gas is a smart financial decision", which I would endorse.

I’d totally get it as a daily… but I’d have to have a fast petrol powered car for the weekends though…

You either get it, or you don't.

It's about moving in the right direction. I think it's so stupid how people here (and at large) dismiss every step in the 'green' direction simply because it isn't solving the problem overnight...so we might as well all drive Camaros.

I guarantee you that if you ever found yourself in that position you would find it extremely difficult to throw down $15-20k at once on a car.

I completely agree bro, it is difficult for many people drop that much cash at once. Specially for me, most I can drop down is maybe $400 before I sell the Civic. But OP *clearly* stated he has enough money to pay the car off cash. Read the last sentence, here ill even quote it for you.

I just barely have enough cash, so it would pretty much break me.

I have a pretty substantial amount of equity in my home, liquid cash is an insurance policy against potential unemployment to me. The financing charges will be about $1k for a 5 year note. If rates were higher, I would not finance.

by "gay", I would say that the car is not cool looking, kind of cheap interior styling. I like the Volt alot more, but the price tag makes it too expensive, which rules out the Tesla as well =P.
