Enough that a 40 hour week will at least get them enough to rent a room, have reliable transportation, and afford healthcare.

Not exactly. I wouldn't feel comfortable paying an adult anything less than $16 per hour.

Im not aware of too many places where you afford everything I listed on $10 per hour.

We offered $10/ hour with health insurance or $12.50 without in cash. Most people took the $12.50 which was awesome because it came out way cheaper not having to report them as an employee and all the extra expenses associated with that. We were cool and gave Christmas bonuses and stuff I think most liked us they stayed around at least?

I assume these are unskilled and cash/under the table wages, otherwise fed/salt would eat that up.

Not a business owner, but in senior leadership in my company so oversee a ton of employees across the country/globe. So living wage varies greatly. By the most part, the answer is yes, but a lot of these people are single parents with multiple kids so...no for them.

Denver is the 9th most expensive rental market in the country, it wont be mega nice, but it will be a clean, safe, room to call home.

source: that was my income and expenses from 2006-2008 lol

The problem is most people don't just have those expenses....

Cable TV, phone bill, car payment, food for a month in groceries is definitely more than 150....

You can always lower the hourly, but give them other incentives like retirement plan benefits. You can always deduct contributions against the business, and plan expenses can also be written off.

Might give you potential tax savings, and keep your employees happy.

those aren't elements of a "living wage," they're luxuries. Want the finer things in life, make something of yourself, advance, and earn it.

If someone is making scraps for wages and has cable tv then they deserve to be poor.

Exactly. I judge my success by how well my lowest employee lives. If my wife and i can afford more than one property and multiple vacations per year, I gotta make sure my guys can at least have a decent home and at least one damn vacation.

I don't have cable TV, a phone bill or a car payment. I probably spend about $150 - $200 on food for myself a month

dude, you asked the question using the term "living wage," and then used the word "room" to define housing. You pay your employees above a "living wage," but that has nothing to do with the scope you set on the topic lol

True. I dont pay that low, but I would never pay lower than that. I was just arguing with my buddy again about how "successfull" he was when none of his employees have ****.

ah gotcha, well that's also a complex issue. My income generators are paid VERY well, and commensurate with production. The person who I employ to clean the office, and run errands, I pay $10 an hour. That's the line between employing someone in his position, and me loosening my tie a few times a week and cleaning the place myself. I assure you, he appreciates his job.

Yeah, the $500 for a room in Denver is even tough to find I bet, I met people looking for closer to $1000 a month, including utilities. There is also a big gap in lifestyle with renting a room, compared to having your own private place, even if it is just an apartment.

Just for the comparison, my apartment rent and the required stuff that they charge runs around $1450 a month, and then I still have power and internet bills, for a large 1 bedroom. Pretty sure that most people that live in the complex are at least a couple per apartment, so it is probably a bit more livable than a single person paying it all.

that's definitely the bottom, but it's easily doable, especially in the burbs. Most often you'll find a finished basement or a 1/3 share of an apartment in the hood, again it's not special, but it's place to start, learn to want, and figure out what you have to do to get.
