I've sold 2 cars to them. Both cars needed major engine work ($3-4000). Bought them in with the check engine light off. Left 45 min later with median KBB value. 10/10 would do again.

It's quick, easy, fair and painless.

Probably also depends on what you are selling to them. Both my cars were run of the mill sedans.

Carmax makes more money on trade ins going to auction than it does on retail sales. If they're willing to buy a car, so be it. They probably made money on the deal.

Of course they made money on the deal since the engine issues are unknown except from the seller. The next buyer is the loser in this case. I’m not saying I wouldn’t do the same.

Sold an 01 audi s4 to carmax with no problems, car had plenty of problems but they gave me pretty good value so I went with it. The other times I looked at selling the car they low-balled me so I didn't take their offer, but used it at the other dealership or private party.

I have offered to sell three cars to carmax.

2004 Mazdaspeed Miata in 2009...50k miles, found out during the carmax inspection that it had frame damage. They offered $9k. I sold it privately for $10,500.

2009 Camry in 2017...100k miles, perfect condition. They offered $5,500 which was a complete lowball. I listed on craigslist for $10k and eventually sold it privately for $8k.

2016 CX-5 in 2018...30k miles. Still covered by Mazda CPO warranty. They offered $16,000. I listed on craigslist for $19k and eventually sold it privately for $16,800.

General rule of thumb, the newer the car the better a deal you'll get from carmax. If the car has anywhere close to 100k miles you're probably better off selling on CL.

those seem like pretty reasonable offers all things considered. I mean I understand why you didn't sell to them, but it always surprises me they even offer that much

Yea, the 16,000 vs. 16,800 I probably would’ve just taken to avoid the hassles of craigslist, but obviously hindsight is 4/20

I think my family has sold 2 cars to them.

Its whatever, you'll probably get a real low offer for the car vs trying to sell it privately but its quick guaranteed cash so ya

For you guys comparing to KBB value, were they hitting you at private party sale or trade in value?

Yeah man, he cost the terrible corporation a few dollars! What a monster!

I took my old Fit there when I was in college. I sold that car private party for $7000.

They offered me $2800.

He cost the terrible lower middle-class family who bought the POS from Carmax. These are the very same consumers you white knight all day.

Trade in.

It really depends on why you are selling and how much you want to deal with the craigslisters. Both times I just wanted it gone, and taking a $1000 hit on it was worth the lack of hassle.

And CarMax cost them thousands by overcharging them. When I got my second Fit, CarMax was charging more for a used Fit with 15k miles than Honda was offering brand new cars.

Not after discount.

At MSRP.

Sold my ITR to carmax in 2006 after failing to sell it on HT for 13k with 80k miles. They gave me 11k.

I then bought it back 12 years later for double that.

In 2017 I sold a 2013 Mustang GT with 8k miles for 24.5K and it sold for 26k. Pretty easy process overall and since they overcharge for their cars I think they also overpay.

My parents bought their new CR-V (costco pricing) from carmax and said it was the worst experience they have ever had. Makes sense to me, their goal is for randos to sell as many cars as possible and then try to be shady and add options/extended warranties on top.

Really? carmax associates are under no pressure to sell cars, so they shouldnt be pressuring you at all.

Ive bought a car from them and found the experience much better than a typical dealer who definitely does that "extra" add on ****.

Yeah, they just had a really awful experience and spent at least 5 hours doing paperwork (then had to go back the next day and do more because something wasn't done right), despite paying in cash and STILL were forced to listen to the entire finance thing. Who knows, it's just modern companies these days where no one really gives a **** anymore. Perhaps their experience was a one-off, but it leaves me quite jaded.
