An emotional support elephant would be awesome. Very smart and great for defense, although you'd have a hard time on a commercial flight.

Kind of a presumptuous way to think. Animals fly for lots of reasons other than saving money. My wife and I flew with our dog Oscar to California twice because he had a health issue and we didn't want to board him during trips that we had planned well before finding out.

I still think it's a rip off to charge $100+ to carry on a dog in a crate. My opinion.

My cat is a registered support animal.

True story.

I used to take my cat with me everytime I left the islands for an extended job on the mainland. He went to SF, Chicago, and NYC with me many times.

At first, I would go to the vet and pay to get a travel certificate for him ( required in the VI) and then pay American Airlines $75 so I could put him under my seat. After about 5 trips, I stopped all that. I would just set the carrier down and cover with it with my coat whilst checking in. Then I'd walk into the plane with him and go about my business.

I got lucky a bunch it seems.

You see, this is my problem with the fee. You are required to crate the animal and they must fit under the seat. They don't take any additional room and count against your carry on luggage (that is typically free). When we would fly with our dog, literally no one even knew he was there. It's a rip off. And no Pinja , it's not because I'm "that hard up for money".

I meant people that couldn't afford to pay for boarding their pets

If you wanna bring a smaller dog with you on the plane that's fine. When you want to bring your Great Dane or St. Bernard is when I draw the line. Board them or don't fly.

A dog that large wouldn't go in the cabin anyway. They have very specific rules about flying with dogs from my experience.

Hmmm. I've seen a GSD on a flight. Maybe it was a K9 with unusual circumstances or something.

She was not wearing a helmet.

Still smaller than a normal person. Get them their own seat.
