Default Act VII: Get another car?

So the Saturn is payed off, and I picked up a 1990 Toyota Corolla for $300. I put about $250 into it so far, timing belt, front main seal, registered and insurance, so all together I spent around $800. Well last night, the low oil pressure light came on. Oil level is fine, so now Im starting to think it could be a friendly reminder the 4AFE is going to give up the ghost soon. The weird thing is that it will come on if Im idling for a few minutes, but when Im driving home at 55-65mph, it does not come on.

This has got me thinking. Having a car with no payment is great, but having a car with no payment that will die on you is slightly wack. I have been stranded before with the Saturn, and I dont want to be stranded anymore. I would like to get something lower than $13K so a Scion xA/ xB would be nice. I dont like payments, but I like reliability.

On the other hand, a car payment could be a monkey wrench in my "big plan" of moving out of Lancaster. lol this sucks

an oil light would either mean bearings worn to **** or oil pump broken (unlikely) or electrical (likely). I'd say swap another 4a in there and keep on trucking.

Maybe a Fit? It's a little over 13k but it's a great daily driver.

It would cost at least $500 to put in a new motor. The car, while was a deal, it is what it is, a 1990 Corolla 199K nasty interior.

I think its time to bite the bullet and just get a reliable low mileage car rather than all these "junkers"

+1. I would get a 2 year old scion/toyota/honda, 04 scion XBs are less than 10k now.

Buying brand new is silly IMO for commuter/econo cars.

There ia a lot of middle ground between a $300 Corrolla and a $13000 Scion. Get something more reliable in the $5-8K range.

Just drive the $300 corolla and tighten your budget. Run it into the ground and by the time that happens you should have some decent cash put away. I drove an 88' corolla with the check engine light on for 4 months before it died on me and even then all it needed was an alternator relay or something like that (i didnt fix it) and then I sold it for 400 more than I paid for it. Patience.

I know exactly what you mean. I just got done paying off my car about 6 months ago, and since then I've had the bug to get a new car that is new, reliable, nice and comfortable. However, I can't convince myself to take out a loan when I can use the money to fix up my house or buy my girl an engagement ring.

spin an pressure gauge into the oil pressure sending unit port to verify low pressure. my explorer showed low pressure on the dash gauge. hot @ idle w/ a guage showed 55psi.

Drive the Corolla into the ground, then buy another car. If the low oil light is mechanical and not just the sender, then it would be safer to put a thicker oil in there, like a 15w-40.

I'd just do that and get an idea of what kind of car you want to buy after it dies. With your financial situation, save up and then get something like a 92-95 Civic. expletive the loan BS. They are cheap, get good gas mileage, and run forever. Plus they have airbags, so it'll be safer then what you're driving.

Getting a $13k car would be downright stupid IMO. You'll be paying more for car insurance and it's not really needed for what you're using it for (basic transportation).

Sounds like the pump is dying to me. Idle doesn't move the pump very fast and if it's not up to par (clogged, whatever) it's not going to supply the engine with it's needs.

Driving your revs are higher and the pump is moving faster which means more oil pressure.

Either way the car isn't worth fixing. You can pick up Integras/Civics for 2-3K out here all day long. Why don't you just buy something half decent?

why guess when he can take 20 minutes to put a mechanical gauge in the sending unit port and confim pressure?
