I'm interested in seeing how this year goes. Last year we owed about $3k. Not sure how this changes with the new tax law and the fact that we'll probably be doing the standard deduction since it doubled this year.

According to all the poors on FB we're not getting a return "cuz Trump".

I'd venture to say I'll be getting back maybe $1k tops. I walk the line as close as I can.

yea I think I'll be taking the standard too. being single with a cheap house, I think itemizing brought me just barely over it last year.

According to an estimator I'm getting 6.5k? Must be because they doubled the deduction? I got 1000 last year. I try to make it as close to zero as possible so Im not giving the government free loans

I'm curious to see how this goes for us this year, we both earned more than previous years, sold our house, bought a house, and factor in the tax cuts.

I think we got back like 3k last year, so I would expect a bit more this year??

I wish they would just flat tax, no deductions, no returns, and shut down the IRS, use the $12 bil per year for something useful.

I hate to say it but I am banking on something this year, to fund this dumb *** Greece trip the wife wants.

I don't want to touch our savings or anything but want to pay for it ASAP, I have too much money earmarked for house stuff, like roof, etc.

Grab an 18 month 0 apr for 18 month credit card which pays 3-4% back on travel, and swing for the fences lol.

^ Hmmmm, good idea there too!
We just hacked out all of our CC debt, so I am a bit reluctant to open a new card though.

I'm so grumpy with how much this trip is, I tried to explain to her, that's me finishing the basement (Which is more important to me).

Ran through a quick estimator....if I claim only 1 kid I owe roughly $100. If I claim both kids, I get back $2400.
Looks like I'm claiming both, **** the Ex.

We split custody 50/50, but I pay all medical/dental expenses all year long to the tune of $760/month. Yes it's pre-tax, but that's still about $400 out of pocket a month for me that she pays $0 into.

If you pay for over 50% of her support I believe you legally have that right

Don't think of it as cc debt, keep all or most of the cash in savings to back it, just grab your rewards, and a little buffer of time to get the rest of the funds together. If I had to guess, these cc companies are going to start reeling back their benefits soon as fed rates climb, so there's no reason not to take advantage of free money right now, especially if you go into it with the right mindset.

I went up a tax bracket (huge raise with a new position) halfway through the year, so I'm interested in seeing how it goes.

Always write off housing interest, etc along with charity donations but I'm still under the $12k cap on deductions (I think). We'll see.

what is all this talk about people having to pay more because of the recent tax cuts?

I normally get $6-9k back. this year we aren't filing schedule F (farm income) so I assume I could probably just use the 1040ez form

^ What do you mean, pay more?
Like more into taxes or more for them to be done by someone?

Right??? My God why is this so ******* hard. Get rid of deductions. No more loopholes for anyone. Corporations, babysitters, CEOs, all pay 25% with no way to deduct anything.

What's wrong with that?

25% tax is a lot harder on someone making $30,000 than 25% for someone making $300,000.

The regressivity of the flat tax is another big problem. Our current federal income tax code is progressive (rates rise with income), and every distributional analysis I’ve ever seen of a flat tax shows a transfer of the tax burden from the wealthy to the middle class. According to the Tax Policy Center’s score of the Perry tax plan, the tax bill of families with incomes between $30,000 and 40,000 would go up by about $450, while that of millionaires would fall by about half a million bucks.

It would also lower revenue by between $500 billion and $1 trillion per year.
