Biggest surprise was Italy not making it (first time ever that a prior World Cup winner hasn't qualified). I don't think any of the teams have as much talent as Germany. Can't wait to watch them all

Some genius decided that holding the Final on the same day as the Wimbledon Final would be a smart idea.

I also have a tough time enjoying a spectator sport if I don't play it. That's understandable.

Well I've played golf and tennis but was rather terrible at both.

Right? I played baseball and hit a ball traveling at me at 60-70mph with a narrow stick.

Surely hitting a ball traveling slower with a fat *** racket would be easier, right? Well, easy to hit yes but harder to aim. And if you're good it's almost as much running as indoor soccer.

Back on topic for a second before KS makes this thread completely about him...

Sucks that the US didn't qualify, but let's be honest--they'd have been out in the first round. Most of us watch it for the really good teams and the stars anyways. I don't have a vested interest in any country, but it's fun watching guys step up on the biggest stage.

They have made it out of the group stage the past 2 World Cups; taking a very good Belgium team to overtime in the round of 16 in Brazil.

Who are the darkhorse picks? I still can't believe a country whose entire population is 1/4 of the population of Fairfax County, Va qualified! (Iceland)

As was just said, they made it out of the group stages during the last two WC's so it's not a forgone conclusion that they'd be out after group.

And our missing the WC was a comedy of errors. From an own goal against the last place team to even put them IN the game to Mexico losing it was all just terrible.

Making it out is one thing. They haven't won a game beyond that since 2002. And they've been dang lucky to make it out the past two times as well as things broke perfect for them. If not for Howard standing on his head, that Belgium game would have been like 5 - 0. I like that they advanced out of the group, but there was no fear of them beating anyone beyond that.

US has had two decent teams in the past 25 years or so. The 2002 team that had youth and grit and (somewhat) the 2009 team that should have won the Confederation Cup.

When all your best athletes play one sport since birth, it's amazing what can happen. I like Iceland though...they are a fun story to watch.

Agreed that Howard was unreal in that match; however, the US had plenty of chances to put them away before OT.

I'm hoping Mo Salah will recover from his Champions League Final injury to play for Egypt. Curious to see when the matches will be played relative to EST. Russia has 11 time zones and the matches take place in 11 different Russian cities.
