Default 10-year-old with autism arrested at Florida school

10-year-old boy with autism arrested at Florida school - CNN.com

Cliffs: kids assaults teachers, mom says "but autism". Kid has a disability.

Is it an excuse? Should we be arresting kids with disabilities?

That does happen. A friend of mine used to work at a school for kids with disabilities, most often autism. She had new bruises/bite marks/etc., from the various kids every time I saw her.

My wife goes through this all the time. She's been spat at in the face, pinched, punched, bitten, and even had scissors thrown at her. It's a dangerous job sometimes, but she loves helping these kids.

Arresting a 10 year old is just stupid. Kid needs help, not punishment.

Was he waived into adult court too? Because why have a juvenile system when you can just do that on a whim.

What has this 10 yr old autism kid been watching at home to understand killing someone?

Not enough details in the story state whether the para-poof reached out to parents or the principal to discuss the matter. Only "given plenty of opportunities to change his behavior"

Wife works with a therapy company that specializes in children with Autism. Like another member here mentioned, she's had scratches, bite marks, hair pulled, and heard various other threats towards here. I'm mostly worried if she ever has to work with bigger and older kids in high school with disabilities.

Shes seen and heard it all, but not once have the police been involved since she's been there.

I'm don't have a solution and have to leave it to the Experts. But even today's school is not safe for kids anymore, along the lines of this subject. Forget about drugs, guns, etc.

An any moment. Some special kids and kids on prescription drugs are mixed in with the general population. Again, I understand they need to live a normal life. But at any time, they can go off too, on other kids.

Then what do you call that? Just a fight?

The point I'm making is if it's not safe for teachers, it should not be safe for the kids too.

Yes,the last time my wife went on a field trip with the kids, some would tell her what they are on, or what condition they have. I'm not talking about one. It's like 3-4. Part of the reason why they tell you maybe...is because they want to know know "why" they behave a certain way. Call it a warning, or an excuse.

My wife felt so bad for the teacher in what she has to deal with daily. And this is the "normal" class.

That's kind of sad. How come kids are defective today?

Education has to be pushed to the bottom of the list in schools because there's too many things to deal with.

-They took him out of the school for conduct
-He went back to the school for a test and was out of line
-Called the police

Seems like a huge jump based on the article, sounds like they got used to him not being in school and disrupting. Then jumped to the farthest thing to ensure he never comes back.

good points Drew. Do these kids have a right to ruin the education of other children or endanger them? Part of the problem with mainstreaming.

kids were just as defective when we grew up. They were kept hidden in other classrooms and repeated several grades. You don't remember because it didn't affect you our your family.

I agree. When we tell my parents stories about what my wife sees while at work, they always mention how they never had kids like that in school growing up.

I remember when I was in school a few years ago, we had to do a Pediatric rotation. I was at a middle school and they had special rooms where they kept certain kids in. These were for the "high risk" children who weren't able to safely integrate into the special ed. classroom.

Yep.

Just like schools have AP classes for students that excel, they have remedial classes for those with learning disabilities.

Putting everyone in the same class because of some 'equality for all' bs is dumb.

One of our best friends taught kids with disabilities. Past tense. F that noise, she got tired of being treated like **** and a lot of the parents dump their troubled kids off merely to have a break. It's a rough gig. I don't blame her for moving on.

That's why when the wife and I have kids, they are going to VN. There they have three schools for all ages:
The school anyone can go to.
The school for the wealthy (still lower standards)
The school you have to be accepted into based on testing, and must continue to excel in otherwise you go to the other two.
