I've only golfed for a few months and I have at least that many birdies if not more.

Current leaderboard

Howell sets course record at Avenel

Charles Howell III was 39 feet, 11 inches away from tying an all-time PGA TOUR record for lowest nine-hole score.

Howell needed a putt of that distance to drop on No. 9 -- his final hole of the day during the opening round of the Booz Allen Classic -- to join Mike Souchak, Andy North and Billy Mayfair as the only men in TOUR history to have shot a nine-hole score of 27.

Howell ended up with a par at the last and a 28 to top off a stellar round of 10-under 61 and set a new course record for the Tournament Players Club at Avenel. His front nine consisted of two eagles and four birdies and allowed him to head to the clubhouse with a three-stroke lead.

Four former champions find themselves among the leaders as first-round action at the Booz Allen Classic continues Thursday afternoon. Rich Beem set the pace early when he fired a 7-under-par 64 that included eight birdies and a single bogey on the 18th hole.

But Steve Stricker, who won the tournament in 1996; Frank Lickliter, the 2001 victor, and defending champ Rory Sabbatini are in a pack finished at 4 under while Billy Andrade, the 1991 winner, is among 10 players who completed the first round in 3 under.

Jeff Sluman is also setting a fast pace. He shot 31 on the front side -- Beem had a sizzling 30 -- and promptly birdied the 10th hole from 12 feet to move to 6 under and one stroke off the lead.

Olin Browne is at 7 under after making birdie on Nos. 16 and 17. His back-to-back birdies left him without a bogey on his card entering the home hole.

Bill Haas, who is making his professional debut, has acquitted himself well so far. He started on the back nine and made his first birdie on the 13th hole, reaching the par 5 in two and two-putting from the fringe from 43 feet, 9 inches. Haas, whose father is TOUR veteran Jay Haas, is 3 under through 10 holes.

I play for fun and to get out..; focus on something else.

I also want to say I am a bit of a purist. I don't think I will ever buy Nike Golf clubs.

Sorry, I will stick with the originals.

Good deals

I went to the range last night and I have come to the conclusion that my new driver is out of my bag forever. It sucks, I can't hit it at all. I took the new one and my old one with me and I can hit my old one fine, not very far but straight and a decent distance. The new one, I just can't do **** with it.

I am going to go buy one of those enormous 400cc + drivers and try one of those next.

I can hit it about 220 on a good drive, if I swing any harder I will slice it or top it. I can hit the utility a consistent 200 straight. My buddy who I was with just got a 400cc cheap driver, Golden Bear I think and I could hit that one an easy 220 with a slow swing, and I assume much farther if I had more than 5 drives with it.

Mine is a Dunlop Solution 25 degree. I love it, but I can't find them on the internet anywhere. Mine was 60 bucks.

I got an Adams Tight Lies last year really cheap at a going out of business sale. It is the only "non-iron" that I can hit decently.

Adams has been doing the "utility" wood the longest. I would suggest that.
