ZC turbo guys... which spark plugs are you guys running???
Okay the turbo is in the car, it pulls really nice and now the gremlins come out!
First what type of spark plugs are you guys using. WHY???
reason:
Ater a 100mile break in, I took the spark plugs out and they are BLACK, really black...
What exactly could the problem be???
This is the problem at the moment, hopefully no more will arise... Thanks!

Sounds like it could be running a bit rich. What are you running for fuel? I hate to say back off fuel on a turbo car, but you might need to. My plugs come out looking a little darker than they did before the turbo/fuel upgrades. I only run the recommended plug for that motor. NGK V-Power BCPR6E-11 I think.
I'll bet that car ends up being pretty quick on the track. You should be able to get high 13s out of it depending on what your setup is. I'm running a pretty half assed setup on my ZC and still hitting 14.00s with a heavy Si hatch.

For fuel i have DSM 450cc injectors, DSM fuel pump, B&M FPR, and the AFC2.(should i take ou the FPR and just use the AFC2?)
My A/F gauge reads stock up to 3500-4000 rpms and after that it reads rich up to redline, but not all the way rich... just halfway rich on the gauge..
Will changing to a different plug help or just leaning out the fuel on top?
Also what's you gap? stock?
The car's really quick. Right now is only boosting 8lbs.(stock 14B) but the boost controller will go on and then it's up to 11lbs.
Thanks!

don't rely on a Air Fuel guage they are notoriously inacurate. you really need to dyno tune with a real good wideband (read real expensive air fuel meter)

Well if you make a change and you run lean at full boost you may get detonation and crack a piston or melt it. THere is not a lot or room for error between whats right and what can seriously damage the motor.

Exactly. I don't want to be the person that tells anyone to back off of the fuel... especially at 8psi. You should easily run 13s with that, and at 11psi, forget it. Assuming you get traction, that should be a blast to drive.
I would consider picking up a exhaust temp gauge if funds permit. I rely on the A/F but as we all know they aren't very accurate. I did change the gap on my plugs to something other than stock, but **** if I can remember what I moved it too. Check the archives in the forced induction for what people are gapping their plugs at. Where are you at with ignition timing?

well the motor was completely rebuild with forge internals and what not. so 11lbs ahould be fine, with the right tuning...

Bosh Platinum 4's. on the box they say if you dont feel the diffrence they'll refund your money. Theres a reason they put this on the box. Because they know the diffrence is crazy. Definetly 10's out of a 10 scale.

Re: ZC turbo guys... which spark plugs are you guys running??? (T3cH 9)
go with stock plugs, maybe 2 steps colder, thats what i'm running.. on stock injectors and a FMU 12:1 no detenation at 10PSI DOHC ZC, i have the timing retarded 3 degress
you might wanna make sure you did that.. retard the timing, will lean it out alittle and make less dentnation at the top end..

Re: ZC turbo guys... which spark plugs are you guys running??? (joey1320)
I saw this thread earlier this week, and tried to find the empty box I saved when I bought my turbo plugs. I went on the recommendation from Casey at Modacar (they've built several Very Fast TM turbo Civics/CRXs in the past so I trust their recommendation)
Anyways, good news....I found the box in my garage cabinet!
Here ya go... these are 1-step colder than stock.
NGK BCPR7ES-11
Stock No. 105

Re: ZC turbo guys... which spark plugs are you guys running??? (tegunderpressure)
I bought them at Modacar the day I was about to do my dyno tuning session.
I tried searching on NGK's site with no luck. But here's what google turned up.
(looks like these might be stock plugs for the Saab 9000's '90-'98 model, interesting)
http://www.partsforsaabs.com/p...id=67
Ahh, here we go!!...importPowerOnline carries them
http://www.importpoweronline.c...819ea
"The NGK 1095 is one heat range colder for many Japanese import vehicles. When you increase power in your vehicle you need to use a colder plug to deter detonation and help pull heat out of the combustion chamber. NGK recommends one range colder for every 75HP-100HP increase. Replacement/Direct OE plug for many High performance vehicles including Honda and Mitsubishi."
14mm, 3/4" reach, 5/8" hex, gasket seat, JIS height, projected tip, resistor, .044"gap

You're welcome - glad to help!
I also PMed the person who originated this thread. I know I could have used this info back when I was putting my ZC turbo together. Thanks again Casey if you are reading this...you guys rock.
