Default y7 oil pan steel, y8 aluminum?

pulled my buddies 96 y7 oil pan to replace my 98 y8 pan.....his is steel, and mine is aluminum? wtf....it's the bolt pattern still the same?

That's what I have been wondering, but I thing the pans are not interchangeable.
