WTF: Crank hits squirters after line hone
so we had a block with some messed up main caps, had it line honed and now the crank hits the oil squirters... wtf kinda mess is this
gsr block w/ls crank, wiseco's and eagles.. stock sleeves, etc... standard mess..
any ideas?

Does the crank hit every squirter if you turn it? Any way your squirters may have gotten damaged when the shop had it?
Are your thrust bearings installed while you're turning the crank?
The only other way this could happen is that you had a line bore and hone done and you had quite a bit of material taken off and moved the crank closer to the squirters.

we completly stripped the block before it went to the machine shop, squirters were never in it when they had it.
we have built tons of blocks and never seen this **** before

Wait a second, is the bottom end all together now, and it won't turn?
If your bottom end is all together and it turns a bit and than hits a squirter its your pistons. I've had this same **** happen to me before with wiseco, I keept thinking it was the crank but it was infact the bottom of the piston skirts catching on the oil squirter.. I later found out that Wiseco recomends .030" of clearance between the squirter and the bottom of the skirt.
It was a pain in the *** since I couldn't talk my customer into just running some oil squirter block off plugs.. I had to heat all of the squirters up and bend them so they would fit correctly with those pistons.

Re: (D@nnY)
happened to me too, ls crank, GSR block.
I just plugged them.
I have seen a lot of people bend them.
Some have had problem with the crank hitting the bolt, so I've seen people grind like a corner off the bolt to make some clearance.

this is pretty common when using an ls crank with a gsr block. the squirters themselves are pretty easy to bend, just slightly bend them in a direction in that they will not come in contact with the counterweights, no big deal

idk.. we have done several of these w/o a problem
its just that this one was fine before the lien hone, now its not. this is w/just the crank in, no rods or pistons

then they took to much off the block when we line bore we always mill the main caps before we start so the we take most of the material off the mains not the block

Sounds like what happened. So now what's going to happen with the oil pump? Do you have offset dowels so the centerlines are inline?

Re: (Muckman)
honestly the squirters are the least of your concerns.....
what happens is when they align hone it and remove material from the block the crank sits farther up( closer to the head) and the oil pump wont align.....
ive seen motors blow b/c the cranks is being pushed down because the oil pump dowels are still thinking the crank is where it was.......
just an fyi...

Re: (Muckman)
the crank did NOT hit the squirters before the line hone, the 1 and 5 caps didnt fit right ( i think the kid may have gotten them from another block).. we told em to just cut the cap.. ill be messing w/it some more tonight

was thinking the same thing.

no idea, we grinded the head of hte bolts so it clears, the pistons come up to about the right spot and the oil pump slid on nice and easy. the kid dosnt want to wait for another block so he's gettin it like it is... we'll find out soon enough i guess

Re: WTF: Crank hits squirters after line hone (JDogg)
J, why did you have the block line honed again? was it just cause the caps were off or was it due to funky bearing clearances?
i had something similar happen to an LS block when the caps were lost and we just used some caps and tried to make it work.
but the caps were like .03 larger then the block side, so there was gonna be a lip so to speak, so they honed it and then the crank seemed to sit funny and the pump had some issues as well

Re: WTF: Crank hits squirters after line hone (bob menuts)
yeah, i think the kid that brought us the block brought the wrong 1 and 5 main caps (gsr block) when measuring the clearances i got negative clearance on those 2... he said they were the only caps he had.. thats why we had it honed.
i told him it was gona break **** but he's a retard and dosnt want to wait for us to find another block or use one of the perfectly good LS blocks we have here.. its GOTA be a gsr block
