Default wrong oil pan kills my turbo

I'm turbocharging my del sol last weekend and I put in an oil pan I have tapped with a oil return. I get the car running and fry the bearings in the turbo. I think the turbo is bad and get another one. I fry the bearings in this one too. I get a third turbo and when I start it I can hear the bearings starving for oil. I shut the car off and take off the oil feed from the block. I crank the car and no oil comes out, I have 0 oil pressure. I've run the car like 10 minutes with no oil pressure total. After some searching I discover the oil pan I used is off a different b-series motor and although it looks the same and bolts up it's about 1/4 inch shorter. Turns out the pickup is touching the bottom of the pan and sucking no oil. Anyway I took out all the bearings and they are fried, but the crank looks good so I just bought new bearings. This sucks because I was really looking forward to some boost but it wasn't to be. Has anyone else heard of anything like this? I never heard about using the wrong oil pan.

If it wasn't sucking oil, shouldn't you motor be fried also?

Dude that sucks, hope you get the right oil pan. Do you have an oil press. gauge?

that's fucked, So the pick up tube was right against the bottom of the pan and was just sucking on the pan?? That sucks man.

Just a tip:
Next time take off your oil feed line and stick it in a bottle and pull your ecu fuse. Crank the car like 8 times for 7-10 seconds and make sure theres oil coming out before you start everything up.

The turbos were used so they were cheap, and I got a good deal on the bearing sets so I'm not out too much money. I just hope it's only the bearings and my motors not too messed up. I'm getting an oil pressure guage now for sure.

There are only two types of B series oil pans

B18c1/5 (GSR and Type R) - they share part numbers, deeper pan due to lower pick up location and crank girdle.
B18a/b and B16a - they share part numbers, shallower pan due to higher oil pick up and no crank girdle.

You have a B16a, if your oil pan was too shallow, it's because it was dented, not the wrong one.

check your oil pump too.. they tend to go out more on v-tec motors..

They are different, not dented. I measured them both. As soon as I unbolted the pan and lowered it down on a jack the engine started pumping oil.

Thats why you should ALWAYS make sure that the oil feed is doing its job by cranking the motor til oil comes out of the oil feed. This is obviously done before you hook it up to the turbo. Sorry to hear that you had to find the problem the hard way..
