WRC - 800Nm @ ~3000rpm how did they do this?
Hi,
yesterday i read an article about WRC rallye cars from what i read that they realize aprox. 800 Nm ar around 3000rpm with 36psi of boost.
i know that nearly everything on such a car is custom, but what kind of turbocharger do they use to produce 800Nm at this rpm on a 2L engine?
thats incredible...
has anyone a clue?

No, they are use Turbo only... i know they have a antilag system which helps spooling at low rpm's but anyway...
the turbos have a 34mm air restrictor in WRC and even with high boost levels it is very hard to make 800Nm out of a 2L engine...
When you look at the engine bay pics of a WRC you often miss a throttle body, which makes me beleave that they use ITB's. the plenum of the intake manifold has also a very uncommon shape. Totaly different from what we know (Edelbrock, Full-Race, etc.)
i did some search about the turbo size and from what i found, it seems to be a race vesion of the GT30R turbocharger... but why do they use such a big turbo if they are restricted to an airflow of about 300 Bhp ... wouldn't be something in the GT28RS size better for that powerlevel and spoolup times? or do they use big turbos just to be able to make a ton of boost which the 28RS isn't capable to do without falling out of the efficiency range?
many questions... hope we an discuss some answers...
