Re: why flame from exhaust on turbo cars (Armani692)
Generally it is running too rich.
But rev-limiters can also cause this condition if they are running a two step. the excess fuel from the miss gets pumped into the exhaust and can light off. If you ever hear a car running a two step, you would think something is very wrong.
This is common in a drag-race setup.

Re: why flame from exhaust on turbo cars (Armani692)
on a roadrace car, the flames are almost exclusively from anti-lag. notice how it always occurs when the car is entering or in a turn. its burning lots of gas in the exaust manifold to create pressure to keep the turbo spooled.
do not try this at home though. burning fuel in your turbo doesn't sound like a good idea. and it isin't.
