Why is everyone so hesitant to dyno tune?
I spent $125/hr for an hour in FL to get 10 hp normally aspirated.
I found a shop in IL to give me 3 hrs for $220 and went from 205 to 253 hp.
I now have the ease of mind that I'm running with the right air to fuel ratio.
Why is everyone posting that they havn't dyno tuned or asking if they're rich or lean? Are there no dynos near by?
I wouldnt say its too expensive given that I was able to gain 10 hp for $125 the 1st time and almost 50 hp the second. I dont know too many mods you can do for so cheap to gain so much.

Thats very true, but look at this way, as in my case, Im very undecided on my fuel system i want to run....why waste a couple hundred dollars if im not finished doing what i want to do to my car, and save that money and use it towards a standalone or some new injectors. But that is a good point, tuning your car will make it last longer

Did you get dyno'd in Peoria?
How close is Peoria to StL?
We have dyno shops here, but everything I've heard from the locals says that none of them know what to do with a FWD vehicle, which kinda suprises me, but that's just what "they" say.

not every1 is interested in WOT pulls to tune their street car. I am sure most would rather street tune with a wideband. And technologies that the hondata has incorporated into its software dyno'ing isnt always necessary.

well thats why you check everything, especially your plugs periodically and make sure that doesnt happen, and it hasnt yet after 7 months, but you're right....100 miles of running lean will toast it. if you do some calculations within the fuel system, you should know if you are going to run rich or lean....

Re: Why is everyone so hesitant to dyno tune? (niedejb)
I dyno everything I own or even drive. I've dyno'd rental cars, motor scooters, trucks, hell a freaking lawnmower if I had to. Then again, I do own a dyno, so it doesn't cost me anything more than the electricity to run the computer heh heh.
The dyno does more than just allow the tuner to make more power, it can spot problems, drivability woes, and a lot more. Just today my good friend was dynoing his stock 240sx just for kicks, while doing this we were able to notice that the water pump would leak under load (and it's probably the head gasket). He might have never noticed it until the car started overheating. Finally, you can't tune ignition timing on EGT's alone, and remember, tuning is part art, part science, and part luck. Certain cars will like a richer mixture than what is normally considered ideal, and some might like a hair leaner and still be plenty safe. The dyno will tell you this by displaying the gains or losses, allowing you to find power that the ole' twin cheek dyno might not notice. Just my thoughts.

Re: Why is everyone so hesitant to dyno tune? (CDooMe2)
Dyno tuning is VERY expensive, that's why most people don't go. When you really start getting serious, like tuning a standalone and you have a serious fuel/turbo setup (not to mention cam gears, etc.), you'll end up spending a LOT of time on the dyno. I've talked to a local tuner and he told me to expect at 6-7 hours on the dyno. So let's say 6-7 x $135 ($100/hr for dyno, $35/hr for tuning) = a lot of god damn money!
That's why I'm going to build the DIY wideband, and tune it myself on the street, then finish up on the dyno.
