Why did i only make 196whp at 8 psi?????
Ok guys... i got my car tuned back in may.. and to this day im still boggled about it and needed to post this up here. first i will list my set up.. then i will tell u the problem
b18b
maxrev manifold
johnny racecar intercooler
maxrev 2.5" dp and exhaust set up
2.5 inch intercooler piping
tial wg (38mm) and Bov
T3/T04e 50 trim turbo with .48 hot side
open loop wastegate set up
unorthodox ultra SS pulley set
hondata s200 w/ boost
DSM's
8 psi of boost
NO CAT.. Im using a test pipe
Now the problem:
Back in May i was schedualed for 2 days of tuning. First day we tuned for WOT. I managed to make 227 on my best run. Second day i go back... cant make over 196 whp.. the tuner was boggled as he thougth i may have changed something in my set up. He also tuned my part throttle very well this day. But for some reason i could not get over 196 whp and 186 wtq.. the runs were very consistent, right after another the car was putting down 195,196,196,195 whp.. Also as a side note my A/F ratio was DEAD on. 12.0 a/f ratio and timing was advanced to 17 degrees, .7retard per psi. Compression test yeilded nearly perfect numbers.. 185 straight across the board, and still to this day im still getting those numbers.. no signs of blown headgasket, warped head, or anything wrong for that matter. The car pulls SMOOTH as hell at WOT and part throttle and its clearly shown on the dyno graph.. its LOOKS like a stock b18b pull but risen over 70 whp.
THe only thing we could come up with is that my car may have overboosted on the dyno the day before during those runs where i made 227whp, and also being that the wg spring was brand new, it needed to be broken in.
Im not even wondering that really, but what i am wondering is why the hell am i only making 196 whp from 8 psi.. while other b18b's will make on average 220 whp or more..i was dissapointed with my numbers then, and i still am.. im planning a huge revenge this winter and i will not settle for anything less then 280 whp
COULD my turbo be too small? most people use .63 on the hot side.. could the .48 be clogging my set up? or does the 50 trim flow less air then say a 57 trim or 60 trim.. i always assumed 8 psi is 8 psi no matter what turbo but i need to clarify this..
also could my 2.5" exhaust set up be clogging my set up? Perhaps what about the maxrev manifold.. is it a LOG style manifold.. if i were to switch to equal legnth could i expect to free up some power? help me out guys
TIA

if u were over boosting then u would have thrown MAP CEL code @ 11psi

yes... 45 degrees first day, and 72 the next
would it make THAT much of a difference?

i would say it would make a big difference! hell...my car driven during the day is as tame as a house cat...at night when it cools down about 30 or so degrees, it's a fucken monster!
also, that turbo of yours is pretty small too...try getting what i run: t3/t04e .63/.60 .57 trim. i think 8 psi from this turbo will be enough to bring you to the 250whp range.
although the problem could also be something else as well...

I think those numbers sound pretty dead on for that turbo, you gotta remember you gained like 75 whp. Thats pretty good but could always be better with a bigger turbo,obviously...

thanks guys.. i am more then likely going to pick up a larger turbo when i do my build this winter....hopefully it will help me pick up more power per psi..
BTW i do notice now that it is summer.. in like 80-90 degree weather my car just feels like ***... it wont break loose in second gear anymore at all.. but i remember back when i first got it tuned back in may, when the nights were like 40-50 degrees out.. it would always break loose in second. so maybe it is a direct result from heatsoak PLUS extremely hot outside ait temp/and low air density.

Don't feel bad, I'm in the same boat... SC34(.63/.60-57), 15 psi, b16a, and I only make 264 @ the wheels.
It's fun, but I expected more.

Re: Why did i only make 196whp at 8 psi????? (SiR Kid)
I made 219 whp/189 wtq @ 8.5psi on a Dynapack dyno. The temperature was 91 degrees and it was humid as hell.
stock block
max rev kit, 57 trim, .82 /ar
stock cat
2.36 inch exhaust
The 50 trim does flow less, but it's pretty efficient from what I hear at low psi levels. 8psi is not 8psi on all turbo's. As far as 8 psi between a 50 trim and 57 trim, there isn't a huge difference at low psi levels--this is based on all of the dyno plots that I've seen and the experiences of tuners I've spoken with. On my previous tune and the same exact setup I made 192 whp, 172 wtq @8.5 psi, on what I now know now was a shitty tune. So there you go; it could be a bad tune.
