why can hondas only run 14-15 psi on pump gas ?
it seems like other cars that come turbo can run alot more psi than a honda ? does this have to do with the head design ?

since we typically run CR levels of 9.1:1 and up, we are more likely to detonate. Thus, we have lower boost. Don't forget though, compression makes good power too!

Exactly... if you took the turbocharger off an Eclipse turbo, you'd find you would not have a very fast car, because it was designed to take advantage of the turbo from the ground up. Most hondas were optimized for higher power without the boost, so they are built for high compression and high revs. Hondas are perfectly capable of pushing higher boost levels if you reduce the compression ratio with replacement pistons or (ick!) a thicker head gasket.

I just melted 3 pistons at 17 lbs boost on VP C16 racing fuel with DFI. How come? Talked to Bensons and they said the boost starts to expand the stock cylinder wall. Then it starts to suck oil past the weak spot and the oil burning starts the detonation and heat and meltdown. My car ran it's best ever 11.43 on that pass so I was pumped and then pass #2...bang and a smoke producing piece of junk.

well, think about the ecplise turbine...it's what a 14g or something like that? possibly an equivalent t25. i know the 300z also used a t25. now, try running a t25 on an integra motor and sure you could run big boost, but you're past the efficiency level and you'd be running out of steam on top end. most honda kits use a t3/t4 hybrid so a bigger turbine and there may be a little lag if you want to call it that down low, but get that thing spinning up top and it just flies. now, build the motor, a stand alone, sleeves, tune it and 18-22psi is doable at the track. that should be good for 350+ hps easy to the wheels. just remember a set psi of boost doesn't mean equal power for different turbines

i run 15psi (daily) on 91 octane pump gas with no ignition retard. JE 9:1 compressiong pistons and stock sleeves. Although i live in colorado at 5400-5600 feet so everything has no air...

the turbo eclipses are slow as ***** without the turbo... one of my friends has a 91 gsx... before he got into modding he had the car and the turbo siezed up... i know the exhaust tract was being blocked... but that car couldnt have been faster than an 86 camry! once the eclipses (or any dsm for that fact) upgrade to simply a larger turbo, fuel system of some sort and a boost controller... they are in the 12's easily... spend a few more grand and they are in the 11's...
those motors (at least im used to the 4g63 motors) are bulletproof... i have never even heard of the blocks getting sleaved... if they swap out rods/pistons? they ussually put in the 2nd gen eclipse pistons i know...
oh... and when u talk about how much a car boosts... with a 16g turbo lets say (for arguments sake... i dont know the #'s) every pound is about lets say 8 hp... now u take a full t4 and every psi may be 15hp... basically saying... boosting 10 psi on the 16g is equivelant to boosting about 5psi on the t4...

Eclipses have iron blocks. Basically, they are sleeved from the factory, but also retain a lot of heat.

It isn't so much that they are iron blocks....it is the fact that they use a closed deck design vs. Honda's open deck design. The closed deck doesn't flex at high boost levels like an open deck would.
