Unless you have really stiff motor mounts, you should run a flex section. It puts alot on stress on the turbo/manifold if you don't.

I don't have a flex section, I'm using a ball and socket.

my revhard manifold cracked after only 2000 miles. I think it was because I wasnt using a flexpipe, only a ball and socket joint that may not have been sufficient.

Its not the weight from the turbo, when there is no flex section and the motor is rocking back and forth, the turbo, manifold and downpipe are trying to "bend" the exhaust right behind the oil pan, sort of like a pivot point.

If you don't have a flex, its trying to lift the entire weight of the exhaust, when there is a flex, it enables it to give at that critical point.

The ball and socket joint has to actually function (i.e. move when it needs to), and has to be located in the correct spot (mine is where the stock one used to be), my setup has over 40K on it, no issues.

i ran no flex pipe on my drag kit and a few runs on the twistys led me to a cracked down pipe. i fixed it and a few weeks later it cracked for a 2nd time this time in a different spot. I used the factory style spring bolts and donut for all of that. I switched to a flex pipe since and have been running the twistys for over a year now and no cracks. i vote flex pipe

I didn't run one for about half a year. I kept getting exhaust manifold gasket leaks and the turbo manifold kept getting loose. After I got a flex pipe all that went away.
