Ok so i just bought a used Garrett t3/t4 50 trim turbo. It has too much side to side shaft play so i figured id just rebuild it. SO, where can i find a legit Garrett brand rebuild kit? Or is there a trust worthy aftermarket supplier? I deffinately dont want to use any of that chinese no-name ebay ****.

my dad has been rebuilding turbo's for 40 years... does that count?..

There is no reason to rebalanced it when its almost brand new. Only reason you'd rebalanced it is if metal went through it or the shaft is bent.

I had a complete rod bearing set go through a ebay turbo. I took it apart cleaned up the bearings and it was like brand new.

Make sure your dad takes it apart to check the bore size with a good micrometer where the bearings go to see if they within spec because you don't wanna order a kit and need to rebore and buy oversize bearings. Gpopshop is the way to go.

i know of plenty of places, but unless i tear it down and there are chips in the fins or the shaft is bent then there is no need for a balance.

I know plenty of turbo shops that would gladly charge $250 to rebuild my turbo, smartass.

And thats not his profession. Its just he can do easily and on the side sometimes on diesel turbos, besides the machine work of course.

For the price of a rebalance its not worth not doing it. It'll cost less than the rebuild kit and make it last longer. I've never had a turbo in balance not matter how good it looked when we took it.

I never said i wouldn't get it balanced, it depends on what i see when i take it apart. My friend bought it brand new and it had 2 oil changes on it when i bought it from him(last week) so id assume its not out of balance... but we'll see

Hang on, if this guy marks eveything off when taking it apart and assembles it in the exact same position, why would he need a rebalance ? I know turbo balancing is important, but i can't see there been a problem if it goes back exactly the same as i was before.

Why if you've marked everything off ? I've rebuilt a T3 in the past this way and its still runing now. Wouldnt a turbo go off balance more or less straight awayway from coke building up on the exhaust wheel ? How close has the balance got to be ?

you can't coke up a turbine wheel... carbon doesnt "coke", you can have a carbon buildup on the turbine wheel but gas engines have such high egt's it simply burns off... we aren't talking about a diesel here.

Sorry thats what i ment. Theres always going be some on there though, its not like you take a used turbo apart and the exhast wheels spotless. I'm not saying your wrong in anything you've said by the way as you most likey know a lot more about turbo's than me. I just want to understand more and if i don't ask i'll never know.

I just know the OP needs to kinda re-evaluate the use of just a "rebuild kit".

The answer: The use of a balancer depends upon what's wrong with the turbocharger. Anything that requires the alteration or change of a compressor wheel or turbine shaft(even if its the same wheel) requires a rebalance of the entire assembly. If its simply an internal rebuild, typically does not, but it is best to do so anyway, to verify that your "rebuild" was solid. But marking the compressor wheel to the backplate is a pretty good start
