I've taken a few "Fine Metals" classes (mostly jewelry work).
Annealing is a simple process of heating up the metal until it glows red (not too red or it'll melt, but just until it is visible. do this in low light) then cooling it off. You do this to make the metal softer and more flexible. Repeat if necessary.

So, I think you can just buy some copper wire and heat it up with a propane torch.

Edit: You'll also need to clean the oxidation off of it after you've annealed it. Just give it a bath in mild acid or sand/brush it off.

will the annealing proccess alter the size of the wire any?..cause the wire needs to be within about +/- .001" range of what im shooting for (.008" above deck height)

thanx for the input so far guys

I don't think the size of the wire will be changed. You are just heating it up.
However, it might shrink if you decide to sand of the oxidation and take too much off.

I'm not sure where you buy wire, but I have seen some at hardware stores, plumbing supply stores, and other metal suppliers.

try using vinegar to take off the oxidation. (maybe heat it up in a crock pot and emerse the wire in it for a couple minutes. Works better when warm)

if you are o-ringing a block or head you should use stainless, not copper

depends. If you are using a steel head gasket, you'll wnt something to compress, copper is idea for that. If you are using a copper head gasket, you dont need compression, steel is the better choice here

maybe you can talk to the place that o-ringed your block. They should have the right size wire. I have a GE sleeved Honda motor and they sent the copper oring with the block. Just my .02

If I was going to anneal it myself, I'd do it by running voltage through it...

100% right. i had steel orings and oem gasket in my 1st setup and i blew headgaskets monthly or at 29psi of boost almost everytime.the steep wont compress and wont bite the oem gasket properly. i switched to copper and the oem gasket and beat the **** out of it w/o one issue. this time i went w/o any oring and cometic gasket. well see how that works.

You can buy some copper wire for o-ringing a block at Home Depot. They sell some braided copper wire that you probably don't want on there wall rack of spools. Like at some of the metal conduit? I have found some perfect stragiht copper wire I think in some phone cables, worked for a GEM block once...In fact tonight that motor was seeing 20psi++ and holding good!

i ended up just buying some solid copper wire and stripping the insulation off of it. i think it was around 12g wire...i measured it with calipers and i think it was like .042 or somethin in diameter which was just what i needed for my setup

It is actually an .041" copper wire. Works perfect. Good job.

When you O- ring a block how do the ends of the copper or steel wire get joined? Are the ends just butted tightly together then seal when it's compressed?
