whats burnt oil smell like?
it emits a white smoke right? i noticed under acceleration i had a big white/grey trail of smoke behind me. when i got home i popped the hoot and saw a consistent stream of smoking coming from somewhere near the turbo. its pretty much odorless... any thoughts?

drip a little oil on your manifold while it's hot and you will smell what burning oil smells like.

is it really noticable? the smoke kind of smells like unfiltered exhaust gas....

normally a white blueish looking smoke is from burning oil and light-medium greyish smoke is from running rich. Do a compression chech to see if the rings are still sealed up. Also chech your coolant to make sure there is no oil mixed in. If there is it should appear as a milky white substance.

someone refresh my memory... if my rings are bad would i know it w/o a compression test? and if so, is it safe to drive around with bad rings?

Burning oil stinks reeaaally bad. If it is water burning, you may not smell it. Unless you're running water only (not a good idea) in your cooling system, any burning water/coolant will also have a noticeable smell...though not nearly as foul as burning oil.

Burnt oil smells like..... uhh, burnt oil. It's hard to explain, but you know it when you smell it, and it's not a good smell.
If I'm not mistaken, burning oil will emit a bluish smoke, not white...

Re: whats burnt oil smell like? (degradated)
so why in the hell is there a big trail of smoke behind me on the freeway? i notice that while i idle, i see smoke coming from under my hood. my temp gauge never reaches halfway though. my idle is fine, my transition into boost is perfect. no detonation. i installed a turboxs boost controller today and i saw a tiny puddle of oil on the compressor side of the turbo. is that really bad? also... i noticed i leave a small puddle of oil overnight where i park but the dip stick shows my oil level is good. (almost touching the top hole in the dipstick)
anyone have any suggestions? i wont be doing a compression test until friday.

try checking the oil lines to the turbo. If there is a slight leak it could be possible that the oil might be spraying onto the exh manifold or downpipe. This would also account for the smoking at higher rpm's as the oil pressure rises.
