What turbo should i go with?
Hey guys I'm trying to figure out what turbo size I should go with, and I cant make a decision. I had the 57mm 34/31e on the car at first and a log manifold. I got the car tuned at T1 last August and the car made 292hp on 17psi. My goal was 400hp and its no where near there. After I got the car back from T1.The car didn't have a partial throttle tune only a full throttle tune so I didn't drive the car much at all. I end up parting certain parts out like the turbo and the manifold. This time I'm going with a ram horn setup but cant decide on a turbo. I was looking at some BorgWarner turbo but just afraid that the turbo would be to big that it would lag. Also prefer shodan input on this I think he has good turbo knowledge. Oh budget for turbo is 1000 bucks.
Here's my motor setup:
B18c1 bottom end
9:1 J.E piston
eagle rods
eagle crank
B16 head
GSR cams
Thanks a lot guys if you could help just try to have a good street car with that makes decent power.

For $1000, you could almost pick up a GT3071R or GT3076R, but after water lines, etc it will be over $1000...lightly used could be an option. There are also options like the GT3255 series. PM TheShodan if he doesn't show up soon...he has a few lesser-known options that should suit your needs well.

Cheap makes power and a joy to drive in the street great spool I loved that turbo no lag and more than enough power made 493@19psi

Re: What turbo should i go with?
Nobody is going to argue that it doesn't make power, but for his 400whp goal, its overkill. Making 400whp would barely work that turbo (10-14psi)...he would be better served finding something smaller and pushing it harder. I dont understand why people tend to buy such huge turbos for moderate power goals...hell, a 50 trim would make the power he wants but spool 1000-1500rpm sooner

Re: What turbo should i go with?
another thing I'm on stock sleeves for now. But I maybe looking to make more power in the future. Now what I need to do? Another thing are top mounts overkill for the street? I was think of a top mount setup (really for the bling factor.)

Re: What turbo should i go with?
My bad man you wondering why I got rid of the turbo I had. Frustration with the build and I though my tuner would spend time tuning the car. Even though I was on log, a nice log at that it was a pfab I was for sure I would see the 400+ goal but I guess when people move on to better things like GTR's you are small fry to them. Sorry If I got a little off subject. But when I do something with my car I tend to get rid of both things because I feel like the turbo and the log was both the problem.

Re: What turbo should i go with?
Well maybe it helps you a bit - I am currently collecting the last parts of my own turbo setup.
Our goals are quite the same - I'm trying to get around 450 HP for now.
But all parts I bought (new or used ones) are able to handle higher boost if I deciede to go stupid with ~ 600HP on street smoking tires till 4th gear xD
So I would rather go with a slightly larger turbo on lower boost (with a bit more lag tho) but having the option to go higher boost later without having to spend another 1000$+ on a new Turbo.

Re: What turbo should i go with?
So this what the dude did when I got to the dyno. Touchy subject to me but I will tell my sob story. I arrive to the dyno at 8:00 sharp. The tuner didn't make it there til like 10 if I recall not only that he took the time to check emails and sit on the computer. He start tuning around 11:30.I've already paid in advance. When he started tuning the car he complain about the floor cabin burning his legs. Now my car is not perfect but it was as strip out ef hatch with no carpet in it. For the most part the car was in good shape. He ran into a couple of problems. He ask why my O2 bung is so for back towards the center of the car. That's how I got the downpipe man from goautoworks. I went to this guy because he is known and I seen him on YouTube run 8sec in a integra that is stupid fast. Even though he don't tune Hondas anymore the dude is still the ****. I just wish I had a better experience with doing business with him.

Re: What turbo should i go with?
If you were building a drag car, that'd be a good plan, but for the streets, topmounts are not the best choice. First, they're expensive...second, they have a large internal volume which increases lag. For a drag car, who cares, but for the street, it will put a noticeable damper on your fun. The best bet is a shorty ramhorn...something with short runners and small internal volume, but with a true 4-1 collector. This will yield the best transient response and better overall powerband for the street compared to a topmount

Re: What turbo should i go with?
I built a setup like this a few years back with my 99 GSR. It was a 9.8:1 CP/Eagle bottom end LS/VTEC with GSR head. I ran an SLS mini ram (Sheepey would be very high on my list ) and a Borg Warner S256. That's another turbo to consider...That combination made good power on the street. On e85 at 16psi, it made 385whp/285wtq with a pretty broad powerband.
Turbo Choices:
50/57/60 trim T3/T04e .63ar
GT3071R or GT3076R (or GTX-R if you have the $$)
Borg Warner S256, 258, or 259
STC Silver Surfer or GT3255 series
The choice comes down to your preference, budget, and ultimately what you need/want out of the setup. Take some time and research your options...there are several threads and dynos for each of the aforementioned turbos

Re: What turbo should i go with?
I got a deal on that turbo which put it well under the $1000 mark, but new ones are a little over $1000. I ran the .70ar v-band housing not the stainless dual-drilled 4/5 bolt standard housing

Re: What turbo should i go with?
Well, now we've gone back the other direction...the 6262 is bigger than the 60-1 and is capable of 600whp+. At this point, you will need to rethink your engine setup as a stock sleeve block isn't going to last long at those power levels. If you aren't planning to sleeve, you may as well dial back your turbo choices to something realistic since you're effectively capped at about 500whp with those sleeves.
Since ~500whp is your limitation, find a turbo that will make the best powerband for that goal. A 6262 is far from the best choice...which now brings us full circle, back to the original suggestions: GT3071, GT3076, S256/8/9, 57 trim, Silver Surfer, etc...
If you have money to burn, upgrade from a log manifold to something with a collector, like a miniram. Also, you could gain some good power by upgrading to ITR cams in lieu of those GSRs
