What turbo for 500+ whp on a EJ20?
I need some input form those that have played with these motors. What type of spool would a smaller T4 turbine produce? What compressor would work well for this type of power in a street car?

Re: What turbo for 500+ whp on a EJ20? (Bailhatch)
What about a T3/T67? ITR206 had a 57 Trim t04e, then switched to this turbo a noticed no difference in spool charecterisitics. So seeing as it would spool like a 57trim to4e, and still be capable of your power goals, it might be a good turbo to consider.
Others to consider, Gt30 and gt35.
What trans will be used? If it is a stock WRX trans I'd look for the best spool possible (long gears, and a lot of rpm drop between shifts) If its an STI trans, your probably good with whatever.

that's more along the lines of what I was thinking. maybe a stg 5 wheel. This guy is convinced he needs a t4 hot side because vivid racing said so. I'm sure it would work fine but I have seen so many honda guys make that power with t3 hot sides so I thought it would be good, and it is a stock tranny. earlier spool w/ AWD is a good thing IMO.
anyone here use a hybrid on a rex? guess i'm gonna have to go troll the Subaru boner sites...

Yea, clubwrx.net.
Supposedly, the ej20 is only good for under 350whp, and thats pushing it.
Your gonna have to go with a jdm sti, I think it's an ej207? Your gonna need that tranny too. . . .
But I say GT35r, because the motors don't rev all that high. . . Well, not like our honda's. . .

stock tranny is junk huh? I saw the Subaru rally team change a tranny in 12 min. that was cool. hopefuly I can break this guys stock one and do it in 11
thanks for the links guys

exactly the same situation as me. 04 and he wont touch it but wants me to build him a kit. sounds like hes gonna have to really shell out to make a reliable/fast rex that can hang with $5000 hondas...should be fun though.

Re: What turbo for 500+ whp on a EJ20? (Bailhatch)
I can tell you that a EJ20 isn't going to feel that fast with a big turbo on it. The way the header is on that motor, makes it one of the most lag prone 4 clyinders out there. Reving it high ins't going to work well becasue wrx are prone to transmisson failures. If you spray it, you might have a pretty good power band. Try your luck, and I'll wish you the best. I also hope you sleeve you motor because the stock sleeves seem to give out once you make over 400 ft pounds of torgue, from what happend to my friends motor. 9 out of 10 times the sleeve that goes 1st is the one closest to the turbo.

Re: What turbo for 500+ whp on a EJ20? (Bailhatch)
Honestly, tell him to get an STi. The 257 is a ~slightly~better starting point.
But, to answer your question better, I'd say to get 500+ wheel, you're looking at either alot of lag, or more displacement. I would have to agree (with Vivid) and go with something that had a T4 hotside. But the redline of a stock EJ20 is REALLY going to limit your powerband. It just doesn't make sense.
And this is a street car? I own a WRX, and honestly, for my money, I'd just get an STi to start with. The base WRX and even the STi just aren't that great for saying "I want X amount of HP" It's been done, but the costs far outweigh the benefits. You (he) is looking at a large amount of cash outlay to reach the goals you have stated.
Sorry for the rambling...
The T67/T3 is a good idea, (.86a/r stg 5) but you're also going to run into the problem of fitment. It's still gonna be laggy. The tranny will still blow someday. The engine will also be on a clock.

Re: What turbo for 500+ whp on a EJ20? (JalopySiR)
lol awesome. I'm glad I can get some real opinions from you guys. What is the point of a factory turbo car that cant make nice power without sleeves and internals and then when you do the transmission blows up?
Anyway. maybe its time I talk to my pal here and have him reevaluate his goals. Apparenty the turbo components are the least of his worries at this point. Anyone have a practical plan for a 'quick' street car with however much Hp it needs to feel nice? Getting an STi sounds like a better start. Are there any bolt on turbos bigenough to make even 400?

Re: What turbo for 500+ whp on a EJ20? (Bailhatch)
The world market base WRX motor, EJ205, is pretty weak. I personally am not going to push it at all. I have a Supra for that.
Getting an STi really would put him ahead of the game by far.
Think about what you get with the ~minor~ increase in cost. It really is worth it.
Anyway, for a turbo that should at least make 400 wheel, and bolt on. look at this:
http://forums.nasioc.com/forum...91885
You want to look at the SZ57, that's be the SupraZilla with a 57 pound wheel. I believe these all use the TD06 turbine, which is gonna be hella laggy. If the engine stays stock, i.e. no increase in redline, your powerband is gonna be SMALL.
I was dissapointed to find out I could not afford to make a WRX into a "monster"...
Oh well.

Re: What turbo for 500+ whp on a EJ20? (Bailhatch)
.... go take a look at the price of a JDM STi engine, then go check the price of the tranny. Then after you change your underwear. Smack that dude, and tell him to just buy an STi.

I know, the $ is just stupid but he wants to do it this way. I guess the goal now is to destroy the curent drive train and replace it with the overpriced crap later. i just work here...

Re: (FRANK_WHITE)
Gotta love the stock trannys....
We have successfully tuned many stock internal EJ20's to 400whp using the FP green or our custom T3/T4 manifold section that uses an External Gate.....All of them are on an AEM EMS, and we do not recommend anything else to do so...(just because we recommend this doesnt mean other shops can tune them to handle this.....)
We also put together an EJ25 non sleeved short block thats capable of handling 550whp....
Our crazy EJ25 will be sleeved and assembled Jim Justice in the next month or so....this motor will use a closely sized turbo to the PT67 with a front mounted position and custom manifold...Crower cams/custom intake and an MRT Dog box....should be a fun car...
BTW we are setting up things with MRT now to become a distributor.....I have 3 gearboxs to build next month...Its the **** when manufacturers give a 2yr warrantee on a product used for racing!

Got any pics of the t3 turbine adaptor w/ external WG flange, or something simular? I might build one for this guy so he can run a cheap hybrid for now. otherwise it looks like the superzilla or some other bolt on...
