Default What model ATI dampers for 500+ whp

Ok so I need a damper and was looking at the ATI damper over the Fluidampr but I noticed that the ATI dampers are available in "race only" versions for over 500 hp. The race only version only drives the alternator and come in 7.074" OD and a 6.325" OD. The race only version also come in different weights for a total of 4 different race only models. I am confused as to which one would be better for me. All insights are much appreciated.

Why not just use stock?

Stock pulleys don't absorb the vibrations of built motors.

That's interesting, I guess my car (any many other people with 5-600hp on the street) is on the verge of breaking down since it's built and has been that way for 5 years now of daily driving? How does changing out pieces of metal in the motor, stock, for another hunk of metal, "built," change anything in the vibrations?

Well, if you have a high hp H22 - - try using an aluminum pulley and find out. Some of the aftermarket pullys do a BETTER job of dampening harmonics. Like aftermarket rods - better in some severe service applications.
See lab tests - -

If they didn't do anything they wouldn't be a safety requirement...

They work well and your bearings and oilpump, mainly, will thank you for it, especially for high-rev setups.

I have close to 40k miles on my built motor with a fluidamper (thanks arturbo) and no problems with my oil pump... cant tell ya what the stock pulley would have done but I know a few hundred dollars of piece of mind is worth it when spending thousands to me.

Sorry I dont have any experience with ati.

the race version is when your only gonna use the alternator pulley. the street version is when you use the ac and powersteering along with the alternator pulley

so if you dont have AC or PS should you just get the race version or are the other differences?

To my understanding, there are a couple different race version models as well.

The race version underdrives the alternator too, also requiring a shorter belt

Just call ATI. They would be able to help you better than we would.

OP, how much HP are you making?

The "street" version will handle 500 Hp or more. It has a removable P/S drive.

The race version is "race only" b/c of the Alternator drive on the damper hub is ~30% underdriven - ie, you wont have enough juice to run all your accessories like HEADLIGHTS (yikes) so you shouldn't get this one unless you truly are just racing - or you don't like to listen to the radio and drive at night.

The 6.3" "race" damper is only good for up to 300 HP since it has a lighter aluminum inertia ring (that's the weight inside the damper)

The 7" race dampers are designed for +300HP and beyond.

Call Ricky at ATI (877-298-5040 or 410-298-4343) and he'll be able to tell you exactly which damper you need depending on what type of driving or racing you do.

Im trying to make 650whp and I was looking at the race version from fluidampr, but the car is going to be street driven. So will I be able to listen to the radio, use my headlights and power the electronics in my car since it is underdriven??? Thanks.

If you go with the Fluidampr you'll have to cut your timing cover apart...you'll have to ask someone w/experience with the Fluidampr to fully answer your question though.

ATI developed the race damper a few years prior to their street version, and it is designed for racing - not running your accessories. They have NO drive for PS or AC.

The 'street' versions are still capable of being used in race applications, but have all the accessory drives. However, it's not really meant to be used on anything with much more than 500 HP - but it would be better than the OEM unit.

The street version came about when ATI saw there was a market for high hp street driven import cars and began manufacturing stock size (~5.5" od dampers) a few years after they developed the race version.

I've heard about cutting the timing cover. I dont have ac or ps so im not worried about the extra pulleys. I guess im leaning more to ATI since I hear its more rev liking and I dont have to modify anything.
