What Can Happen if you **** Pound a Stock Block.
Hey, just figured i would let people know what can happen if you **** pound a stock block, seeing as i've never seen this until it happened to me, i'm sure that alot of you out there have seen this, but i haven't and i've looked through this site ALOT. So for all the newbies out there planning to turbo their cars, be weary of what can happen if not done right.
heres the pics.
Backside of block, Big black hole in it from flying rod.
Front of Block, Flying Rod Syndrome (FRS)
Front of Block, FRS
Front of Block, FRS
And Lastly, A piston, or whats left of it.
The story is that we swapped this motor in with only 20xxx on it AND it was a proven mileage!! we hooked the turbo set-up on it (was on last motor) and made a couple of improvements. One of those Improvements/fix was I had to get a new actuator for the wastegate(internal wastegate). Well since my turbo was IHI, they don't make parts for it anymore. So i had to get a adjustable universal one and mach it up. So when it was installed, the arm on the actuator wasn't straight so when i took it for the first ride and it actuated, it didn't close the wastegate all the way, thus no allowing me to build boost fast like it was before. Well eventually we figured it out and i fixed it, except i didn't hook up the Actuator right away, thus having 10-11lbs of boost on a stock block. Well after about 4 hours of that, right as i realized i needed to hook up the actuator, boom, this. But i'm hopefully getting a block that has Tuner Toy Rods, Vitara Pistons and ACL Racebearings.
Don't Thrash, this is a newbie learner mistake, DONT MAKE IT!!

wtf??? what block is this? from my experience a block has to be totally untuned for this to happen, well on any b series block as a matter of fact ..ppl run 9-12psi for months with no problems on a stock blocks that are tuned..
hell am running 15psi street tuned and doing low 12s.

WOW, amazing carnage. After 40K boosted miles on my stock block (180k total) I finally spun a bearing. I have been running 12psi for years, but that was on a conservative tune.
Sounds like it was not tuned for that amount of boost.

3 years/70,000 miles/daily driven/pump gas/boosted ls on 10lbs using chrome=250whp 230tq low 12's on slicks.
Invest in a good tune and you won't destroy blocks.

that's not a stock block problem.. that's an untuned block problem (built or stock). run a good wastegate and get the thing tuned for the boost level. you can run 10-12 psi for a long time on a stock b-series with no problems.
Going on 7 months at 10 psi here and it was 2 years at 7 psi before that. Not to mention the swap (bought used from Hmotors) has been in the car for a total of 7 years.

well oddly enough it had a ChromePro tune on it for 6lbs of boost, with the upgraded fuel pump, stock wastegate on the turbo, MSD injectors and Cometic HG. So i dont believe it was a major tunning issue. BUT that tune was for the last motor, which was the exact same motor, which to be honest i thought would be good until i could find some time to go drive 2 hrs and get it tuned. and **** pound is a redneck term used frequently here in WI lol. but its okay, it was a fun ride while it lasted, my buddy has a GSR full swap i may buy from him for an AMAZING snag price. just trying to research if my HASport mounts will work on that motor. D series Parts for sale!! Crower turbo cam and other stuff!!

yeah 3 of the 4 broke through the block, 1 of them snapped clean off, the one connected to the shown piston. and let me tell you, if you've never blown a motor up like that, it is an amazing feeling lol. Not the whole new motor and what not, but just when it happens, the noises, and everything else. The motor just shuts off, but just imagine a shotgun shooting a piece of metal and slow down the sounds from that, would probably be the bestway to describe what it sounds like. And just to let everyone know, there wasn't a single sign this was gonna happen, just happened while 3/4 throttle at 3rd gear going around 50mph

nice!
ive been running a 200,000 miles stock block untuned and hit 7-10 psi 30+ times a day for about 10,000 miles, not a big problem yet : )
D series FTW!!!

Makes a BOOM with a lot of rattling like a spray-paint can, and banging as parts ricochet off the bottom of your car. Luckly I've only done it once, from a motor that was already junk when I swapped it in. The last 3 d16 blocks in that same car took out rod #2 all 3 times.
That's some spectacular carnage. The guys at realhomemadeturbo.com would love to see that.

yeah, its a special time when you blow up a motor, its like sex with your car, then leaving in the morning while it's still asleep.
my last d series was sold to a buddy after being removed, he tore it down and found that the motor had 4 spun connecting rod bearings, yet when it was in my car, didn't give a hint or anything that they were bad!! GO D SERIES!!
