What is the advantage of "twin inlet"
I hope you know what I mean.
I dont have a pic(right now) but Im sure art, earl, or geoff does.
WIth some of the newer turbos there is like a 4" ring around the smaller inlet(thats say 3") and this improves efficiency somehow. they talk about it in the new turbo magazine, but I briefly looked at it and never bought it and wondered how it works?
Also could you make something like that for a turbo with a 4" inlet(that is flared)?
Machine it down and would that work?
Someone please post a pic of one of these monsters( i cant seem to find any)
thanks.

Re: What is the advantage of "twin inlet" (SiRkid)
ive got acces to about 50 of those turbos. If Im not mistaken, they are all on some big beefy deisels...
I dont know the reasoning behind them being like this, but there has to be a reason...

I believe that the inner lip of the compressor housing (the 3") one creates a low velocity zone, so that the air can run over the low velocity zone is higher velocity. The higher velocity would yield more airflow (density increasing) into the turbo. This would contribute to greater efficiency.

Re: What is the advantage of "twin inlet" (boosted hybrid)
I see.
hmmm.
I used that turbo as an example. there are quite a few smaller ones availible with this double intake business.
im wondering if you can take a to4s housing and machine it to make something like that. Im thinking that would be possible and for like $100 you could improve the efficiency .. hrmm

I'd like to try one of these bb FP turbos on a honda - the turbine housing also comes flanged for a 40mm Tial wg conveniently enough.

What this inlet design allows for is a little bit of the air from the upper compressor blades to "bleed" off a bit, and allows for a better choke line, or surge line, i forget which. And yes, diesels very very commonly use this design. A side benefit for ricers is that usually it makes the turbos a whole lot louder as well

ding ding ding! good answer dave
that is correct it mostly makes noise, but it also moves the surge line up. It really just helps make a smaller turbo seem slightly larger.
