Default Well I guess it was bound to happen one day... (R.I.P "freak" B18C1)

...and she went out without a 'bang', how sad

Earlier this evening, I was putting some finishing touches on the GSR's partial throttle map when I find myself next to a 94-98 Mustang GT who plays a game of 'pace me'. Natrualy I oblige since the GSR has been running mighty well as of late. A click the AVCR into setting A, a setting a rarely use since I've bee focusing on tuning at 6psi (wastegate) and 10psi which is the B setting on the AVCR.

From a relativley high mph, I left the Teg in 4th when I hear the Mustang get on it. I roll right into the throttle and imediatley stop his pull and start walking away at a heatly pace... then it happens. I suddenly feel a loss in power, not the instant kind you get when you blow a charge pipe, but a gradual yet quick (3-4 seconds) loss in power accompanied by the sound of what I thought were rocks being kicked up under and out the back of the car. Well, turns out 'dem weren't rocks

The car is smoking and sputtering like it's running on 2 cylinders, instantly I assume the worst. A quick glance at the AVCR's peak numbers and I all but died when I saw a peak boost of .98, that's about 14.5psi! I limp her home at 30mph on the expressway and finally get her into the garage. Pull the plugs and although there's no sign of immediate damage, #2 and #4 I can see were no firing whatsoever. A quick compression test seals her fate, the numbers:

0-120-90-240

*sigh* Well, she had a great and wonderous life. Made 161.5whp with only an intake, 244whp @ only 6psi and 293whp @ 10psi with a super rich A/F. Bottom line, i'm gonna miss this motor. Now it's time to decide her future... buy another stock bottom end and leave her be, or buy pistons/rods and build for boost. Either way, she's always been good to me... and so here's to the many fallen Honda brethren, of whom I now join the ranks.

sorry to hear

been through that myself

did you leave the mustang covered in oil, or did you not kick a rod through the block?

time for stout internals

I dunno about oil, though he might have some piston ring embedded in his radiator

Rods didn't give up, just the rings/ringlands. I'lm gonna start the teardown tomorrow.

AVCR's have been the demise of a few FC's from overboosting. I'm not very fond of them. But now you get to build a better kickass motor

Damn, you would think a 500+ boost controller wouldn't let you overboost!

Sorry to hear man.

Just remember when something breaks, it is just an excuse to upgrade!

Yea well, like I said the A setting is a setting I hardly ever use, and the AVCR has a bad habit of setting all duty cycles the same (A and B), so when I reset the hi-boost cycle, the lower boost changed as well. I guess the AVCR was fighting the boost solenoid and well, the solenoid won

Already pricing some JE's and Eagles..

Exactly. I've been running the AVC-R for over a yr. I found that it would make A boost change to whatever your B boost was. Now I switched my habit and made A low boost and B high boost. It works perfectly and doesn't change. You might want to try that next time.

And to the others, the AVC-R works great. The only time I'll overboost is if you change the duty cycles manually and make them way too high. It'll pull them back, but not fast enough to avoid a huge spike (which you made yourself).

And btw, 1 Kg/Cm^2 is 14.2 psi. .98 is about 14psi.

not too long ago I was driving on the street straight off a 7 pound spring on my Tial wastegate ( no boost controller of any kind) in a cold night and it overboosted to 19 pound. Luckly nothing happened and it stopped overboosting after longer drives. From there on, I stopped blaming on my previous boost controller for overboosting.

I did the same thing...real cold day and i had my MBC out for some reason, just running off the .45bar spring. I get on the car hard in 4th gear and its just spinning the tires, i hit the boost cut and check my boost gauge and the needle is already on its way down @ 17psi lol.

BTW: sorry to hear about the motor Was this the first time it boosted to 14psi? Im suprised it blew, how was that colum of your map?

rookie error of not putting in a boost cut, would have saved your motor. Sorry it happened

Yea Uberdata doesn't have a functioning boost cut yet.. hell Hondata hasn't had it for very long either, but yes I would've used it had I had it
