welding in the blockguard??

I was reading in the searches about blockguards and someone said that they should be put in and welded to be done correctly. is this true, or can you put them in without welding them?? I am going to be changing my head gasket and thought I would throw one in while I have the head off. also how far down do they have to go. I say some say one mm. and then some say flush. what is your guys experience with these things.

You must have the "bores punched" when installing one. If you install one without at least align honing the cylinders you'll probably do more harm than good. It can put the cylinder walls out of whack causing them to warp or crack if you just plop it in there.
