Vortech FMU or Greddy Bluebox?
Right now, I'm running the Vortech 8:1 FMU and missing link. It isnt powerful enough, I know this... but I'm still debating what I should do. Everyone at the shop thinks that I should run the 12:1 FMU. Everyone on the Turbo D16 forums says I should run the bluebox (FMU must be removed of course) if I am not using an AFC, hondata, etc. They have good experiences with it and have seen 10psi+ with it no problems. It makes your car run rich, which is safe of course, but slower. I will possibly be running 8psi+ in my car.. which is where the FMU would run out and wouldnt provide enough fuel. Before anyone says that 8psi or higher on a SOHC D16 motor is suicide, I've been researching for a long time and have read that an 8psi daily 10psi at the track is a quite reliable setup if the motor is provided with enough fuel. Most of the cars running 8psi+ on their d16s run the bluebox or apexi safc/vafc from what I see.
Ups and downs of the FMU and Bluebox. What do you guys think I should do? Stuff I read says that the FMU is lame, and the bluebox works well. People around town say that the bluebox is lame. I could go out and buy the Apexi SAFC and end all of this questioning, but I dont have the money right now.
FMU
Ups: Easy to install, provides extra fuel, no wiring.
Downs: Forces injectors to put out more fuel by loading the fuel rail pressure; does not assist with CEL's caused by the MAP sensor.
Blue Box
Ups: Electronic, designed to be used with the 15G; keeps your car rich; provides extra fuel by altering the fuel map; can be used past 8psi.
Downs: rich fuel map over 50% throttle; decreased gas mileage; not tuneable.
A guy in Prattville, AL (outside of montgomery) has been running about 8psi daily for about a year and a half. Recently he has been turning up the boost because he has gotten RC 440s and the Apexi VAFC. But before he ran 14.012@100.52 at 8psi with a 2.277 60'. Mods at the time included Greddy 15G Turbo Kit, Greddy Type 31 FMIC, Greddy Type S BOV, Greddy Evolution Exhaust, Greddy Profec B on a 1999 Honda Civic EX 5-speed on stock 14"s with uniroyal stock tires. This is no lie, I have the timeslip pic and video clip. My friends and I have seen him running at the Montgomery 1/4 track.
