upgrading turbos and need help on understanding different A/R #'s
well im upgrading my t3/t4oE. i dont know really what would be a good turbo to upgrade to there are so many choices out there. i dotn even know the specs on my turbo now lol. the only numebrs on it are A/R .50 thats it i cant see anythign else. all i really know about this turbo is that it reaches full spool at about 4800 rpms. i am working for 450-500 to the wheels now and hopefully 600 after summer time.
i see all types of sc61's on the net with different a/r numbers and stuff. i see others that say they have t3/t4oe housings... but that scares me i dont want another t3/t4 turbo. can anyone help me pic a good turbo??

try this link, you put in your engine specs and desired boost, it will tell you what turbo is best...
http://www.turbofast.com.au/TFmatch.html
Well considering you guys have 2000 posts each you probably know of that link and more, so perhaps the link i gave is just more useful to folks like me that might be lurking

well basically A/R ratio is the area/radius ratio on the turbine and the compresser housings i hope that helps sryy if that wasnt what u were lookin for or if i didnt understand the answer u were lookin for

I would talk to Arturbo. I had a t3/to4 turbo also. I am upgrading to the sc61. 63 ar stage 5 wheel. I want more power out of my setup .

Re: upgrading turbos and need help on understanding different A/R #'s (TurboLSVtecTeg)
The A/R ratio is the cross sectional area (A) of the scroll of the housing divided by the radius of that housing at the same point. In general terms, a lower A/R means that the turbo will have better low speed response but will be less likely to hold power at higher rpm's. A higher A/R ratio means that the turbo will not respond as well at low rpm's but will make more power at higher rpm's.
We're revamping our web site and will try to have a photo of a housing that's been cut in half so we can illustrate this better.
To get 600whp, you'll need approx 750 at the crank worse case scenario. There are a number of T4's out there from different manufacturers that can do this. Our best suggestion would be a PT67 in either a P or GTQ trim. A GT4067 would be an even better choice. There are a number of A/R sizes to choose from with a T4. We'd need to know a bit more about your combo and what you want to do with the car to give you a more solid recommendation.

Re: upgrading turbos and need help on understanding different A/R #'s (nextelbuddy)
Can't really say which is better. It all depends on your hp goals. Also, we really don't make a SC61 with a 52 trim wheel. We make 3 different versions of this based upon the displacement of the engine as follows:
2.0L and under SC6152E w/ T350 76 trim - 630 peak hp
2.0 to 3.0L SC6169E w/ T04 69 trim - 650 peak hp
3.0L and up SC6176E w/ T04 76 trim - 680 peak hp
This is assuming that you're not using nitrous. All three of these are using the GT35R compressor wheel. If you look at the compressor map, it offers 79% efficiency at 18 psi and 72% efficiency at 23.5 psi.
These ratings are also based on the T04E compressor cover with the 3" inlet and 2" outlet. The larger T04S cover (4" inlet / 2.5" outlet) would be worth another 10-15 hp with this turbo.
As far as which turbo is better, the SC61 or Turbonetics 60-1, that's really not fair for me to answer since I'm the sales manager for one of the companies. I suggest you let other people who have experience with these share their experiences.
Hope this helps.

Re: upgrading turbos and need help on understanding different A/R #'s (Rod Short)
How would the GT35R compare to the SC61 in relation to spool time and hp output in a 2 lit vtec motor since the SC61 uses the same compressor wheel? The one with the .82 A/R T3 turbine housing.

Re: upgrading turbos and need help on understanding different A/R #'s (calib17a)
We're not an install shop, so I don't have any actual numbers I can share with you. The out-of-the-box Garrett GT35R comes with either a 0.82 or 1.06 A/R T3 style housing with a 4-bolt discharge side. We're using our own proprietary T3 housing with a smaller .63 A/R, which is more appropriate for the displacement that you have with your engine. I expect that the .63 would spool about the same as the SC61 (if not quicker because it has a GT wheel) while the .82 would not just because of the larger A/R. Hope this helps.

So if i have a presicion turbo can you tell me the specs on it a little bit, like when it should reach full boost and everything else, i cant seem to find a "model" number for it.. its says a/r .60 on the intake side, and a/r .48 on the downpipe side.. thanks alot

Well, the .48 is the A/R on the turbine side and the .60 on the compressor side tells me you probably have a T04E cover with a 3" inlet and 2" outlet. It's obviously a small T3/T4, but I'd really need to get the turbo in here in order to give you a worthwhile answer.

Re: upgrading turbos and need help on understanding different A/R #'s (FwdCivicHatch)
I'm running a sc61 60-1 trim, .63 ar with a stage 5 wheel or as Rod put it 3.0L and up SC6176E w/ T04 76 trim - 680 peak hp. I love this turbo. Right now I have no numbers but I'm only running 6 psi on a stock type r and the power feels great. I'll let you know what kinda numbers I'll be putting down once I get it tuned on 10. But I would def recommend this turbo.
