Unorthodox Crank Pulley Timing marks
I'm tuning my friend's car and for some reason we can't get his ignition timing set right. The timing reads way advanced at the distributor even with it fairly retarded. Are the timing marks on the pulley off at all? I think it could be a problem with the ignition system, but i was just wondering if maybe it was the pulley.

Have you checked the timing manually? As habit, I always compare stock crank pulleys & cam gears to whatever I'm putting on. You might slide a stock pulley next to the UR to make sure the lines are in the right place. You might also check the timing marks are in place (crank to cam gear) also. HTH.

the crank and cam gears are all lined up TDC. He doesn't have a stock cam gear to line up against it either

with it set pretty close to the middle i can get the 3 lines to line up with the mark on the timing cover, but this is when i have the timing gun advanced to 16* so really i should be lining up the single line.

Re: Unorthodox Crank Pulley Timing marks (SOHC_MShue)
There's only usually 3 cut lines on the unorthodox pulley. The two lines that are close together are 14 / 18 deg.... you should be aiming for the middle.
The last mark that's another inch and change away is TDC line.

we were using an advance timing light. So with the timing light set at 16* we should be aiming for the single tdc line rather than the three lines, but we weren't even close to it.

With the crank set to TDC, there should be a mark 16degrees to the left of the TDC marker. Those are the 3 lines you mentioned, and those are what you should be aiming for.

I have never seen anyone time it the way you described unless they have a timing gun that is non adjustable. If you have an adjustable gun then setting it to 16* you will aim for the tdc mark. I am positive about this. We even checked it on my friend's car and with the gun turned up to 16* it was aimed right at his tdc mark.
