Understanding cylinder heads and their effect on a turbo's capabilities

Definitely correct me if I'm wrong, but my current understanding is that if you were to take a cylinder head (a non vtec head for the sake of simplicity) and you attempted to push as much pressure as possible and bring a turbo to its limit, making as much horsepower as possible...let's say it took 20 psi to do that on that nonvtec head. Now, you take the identical setup, change out to a better flowing vtec head, and you should reach that same limit of the turbo, but you just accomplish it with less pressure. Is this correct? Regardless of the cylinder heads ability to flow "more" air, you still reach the same wall that the inferior cylinder head did?

I ask because i have a friend with a ported vtec cylinder head that i am considering picking up... but it seems pointless to me to spend the money on a better flowing head if the only real benefit is that you do not have to run as much pressure to achieve the same result as the poorly flowing head. What am i missing here? Sure it's probably a little more responsive but is that alll? Does a better flowing head increase the amount of power a given turbo can produce or is that limit static and based on the turbo characteristics no matter what amount of air your cylinder head is capable of holding? School me. Thanks.

Re: Understanding cylinder heads and their effect on a turbo's capabilities

keeps the turbo more efficient. meaning making more or same power at lower pressure. you would have more power towards and into the efficiency zone. a better flowing head would help slow you down from maxing out the turbo.

sounds like you have the rite ideal.

however, if the turbo isnt maxxed, I would just up the boost. unless the IATs are starting to get hot.
