uberdata datalogging
has anybody tried soldering a usb socket into the ecu and using a usb to usb cable to connect between computer and ecu. I seen usb sockets at digikey.com for a couple of bucks, and they look like they would solder right into the ecu. idea just came up and want te see if anybody tried it before. do the socket fit the ecu and does the cable work without modifications? if it does it would make a clean looking install

have post on uberdata site yet?

Re: uberdata datalogging (D-booster)
no, i havent registered yet, tried to register but having problems

Re: uberdata datalogging (600gixxer)
You can't just connect a usb connector to the board. The ecu sends serial data out.
When people use the 'nokia data cables', the cable has circuitry inline that does usb->serial in the correct format. The cable requires a special windows driver. You can't just wire it up. |
Re: uberdata datalogging (dustin)
i have a usb to serial driver. i'm using the burn1 programmer i got from moates.net, it came with the driver and a usb to usb cable. wouldn't this driver work for ecu too?

What is the driver going to run? The burn1 has onboard electronics that deal with the driver. You need HARDWARE to communicate with the ecu. Just a USB connector is not hardware. The ECU doesn't "speak" USB... USB isn't even a data format. |
Re: uberdata datalogging (dustin)
o yeah. didn't even think about that. maybe i'll just put a usb plug on the end of the nokia cable then. at least i can take the cable off when i want to
|
Re: uberdata datalogging (600gixxer)
it is much easier than that.. look around the uberdata board. I could maybe show you some pics if you ask nicely. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emsmilep.gif

You're making this a lot harder then it needs to be. Call up or go to your nearest Radioshack and look for the Mobile Phone Data Cable for Nokia Models 3285 and 5185. Tell them you do not need the data cable software (it costs $30). You can download it for free on the PGMFI.org site HERE. Instructions on how to wire in the Nokia data cable to your ECU can be found HERE. You can use other data cables, but the Nokia 3285/5185 can be found for $8-$10 at you local Radioshack. The reason they are so inexpensive is cause they are a discontinued item. I cleaned out the two local Radioshacks of the 3285/5185 cables they had in stock. I was driving through another town about 40 miles away when I drove past a Radioshack. I went back to see if they had any, and I left with one cable. Right now I've used 1 cable set for my ECU, and I have two spares that I will be giving out to locals. EDIT: the data cable has a USB plug on one end and the cell phone plug on the other. In between the two plugs along the wiring is a module that converts the ECU language to PC/laptop language. What you are doing is cutting off the cell phone end and looking for the transmit, recieve, and ground wires and wire them in to CN2 in the ECU. |
Re: uberdata datalogging (BlueShadow)
You can always just use the good old ebay cables too. They work like a charm and are much easier to do.. they only have three wires, not 10 like the radio shack cable.

Wasn't that guy HiProfile having issues with the Ebay cables? Almost every town has a Radioshack, so it was more convenient for me to just go to those. I have two Radioshacks nearby and they are both less then 5 minutes driving distance, and they each had one left. |
Re: uberdata datalogging (BlueShadow)
Every radio shack by me is out. Because I got the last ones. Every ebay cable I have got has worked. You just need to figure them out. I think I got him squared away with his cable. They usually come with three wires, either (green, blue and white) or (yellow, blue and white) green or yellow goes to CN port 1, blue goes to CN port 2 and white goes to CN port 4. Piece of cake.
I already posted this on uberdata's site. In the datalogging forum. |

LOL!!! I like that, "every Radioshack by me was out, because I took them all" it's funny cause the same is true for me. hehehe |

Re: uberdata datalogging (93turbo16)
I used the same ebay cable and it works great! https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif I was pissed though because i called radioshack a couple of weeks ago asking if they had them and they said no. Then i went there for something else a few days ago and they did have them http://images.honda-tech.com/set1//smile/emcrook.gif

Re: uberdata datalogging (SOHC_MShue)
i didn't want the wire hanging out of a hole on the ecu. i just wanted to put a socket on the side of the ecu so the wires aren't permanetly hanging off the ecu.

Re: uberdata datalogging (600gixxer)
if thats the case then you can do a serial cable setup. I believe you can get the parts you need here http://superdroidrobots.com/rs232.htm
|
you could just put the module from the cable inside the ECU. There is a little room in there for the bard covered in some shrink wrap or tape.
I soldered my extension wires directly to the board in the module, you could take it one step further. I also made one for a friend where I used 9-pin connectors. I just made sure the corresponding pins the same on each connector, so he can pull it out aytime. |
I solder in a four pin header, and use the corresponding femail header on the datalogging cable. Plug and play just like super droids. Plug it in when you need it, take it out when you don't.
|
Re: (93turbo16)
i soldered up a phone connector to one end of the cable and a female phone jack to the inside of the ecu
|
.....what is the radio shack p/n for this cable?
I've called around and either they're out or they don't know wtf I'm talking about. Couldn't we just go to a low budget cell phone store and buy the same or similar thing? |
Re: (Black R)
The p/n for the discontinued Nokia Cable is #17-787, Nokia data cable for 3285 and 5185 models. The drivers needed to run the cable on your laptop can be found HERE.
If you go to the Uberdata forums and look in the DATALOGGING section, you can see stickied threads on how to use any kind of cell phone cable. |
Re: (BlueShadow)
Oh yeah, there is a newer nokia cable that is NOT discontinued. It has fewer wires in the wiring. And it doesn't work. I know because I spent the better part of an afternoon trying to get it to work hehe.

doh! I'm thinking of trying the http://www.superdroidrobots.com/rs232.htm cable... but I have no idea which one to buy... type 1? 5v? I guess you can use the 4" long cable and have the header of the plug screwed into the ecu case for a clean look..... https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif Modified by Black R at 2:28 PM 3/17/2005 |
