Turbocharging my 96 HX?
I'm curious about turbocharging my '96 HX for improved fuel economy, emissions and performance. Am I retarded? What will it cost? What are the drawbacks?

Umm, alright noob, no. Fuel economy, maybe the same with some real good tuning, probably not more... Emissions? no freakin way. Performance? yeah, do you know what a turbo does? Anyway, why don't read some turbo threads and we'll forget this post ever happened.

Generally, anytime you increase power you use more fuel. Your best bet for fuel economy would be to restrict the power even more. Though, the HX does a good job of that alone with VTEC-E.

Re: (undercoverdc2)
it is highly possible to get better mpg while boosted, ive done it numerous times.
i think for the hx you need to run that hx ecu to control the vtec e properly. for simple fuel management i think you are just looking at an fmu.
best bet, get a t3, fmu and run low boost levels of like 5-6 psi. its gonna be another 50 hp which you will definately feel, but wont be pushing the far limits of the motor

Turbo
Yeah, I know what turbo charging is, that's what gave me the idea that it would lower emissions, since it is basically recycling your exhaust. This article:
http://www.energy.ca.gov/.../d...aring/ public_comments/HONEYWELL_COMMENTS.PPT
states that turbocharging a gasoline engine can reduce emission about 10-20%, but they may be comparing a non-turbo larger displacement engine with a smaller turbo 4 cyl.
So, I guess what I'm finding out is that to achieve comporable performance, a smaller turbocharged engine is more fuel efficient and cleaner than a larger displacement engine.
I'll see what I can find about fuel efficiency and get back here.
