Default Turbo newbie: What are the shims that come with a wastegate? PICS




What are those shims for?


And how do i find out how much psi my wastegate can handle? (i dont even know if i asked this question right) i've always been an all-motor guy but i'm helping my freind install a turbo kit on his ls/vtec.

The ring is actually the main seat of the wastegate. It is installed seperately between the flange and the wastegate to make a good seal. The two flanges in the picture are, well, flanges. They are what you weld onto the manifold and then attach the dumptube to.

To find the boost setting of the wastegate, remove the cap and diaphragm, then look at the color of the spring. Based on the color you can find what the setting is. (Vise the wastegate before moving the cap bolts)

The bent/curved washers that are included are for the allen bolts. The flat washers are crush washers to seal the barbed banjo vacuum fittings. The black things are gaskets for the inlet/outlet of the wastegate, but they suck and you shouldn't use them. You can either run no gasket, like many people do and the carbon from the exhaust gasses should be sufficient to make a proper seal, or you can run a stamped metal gasket or fire-ring style gasket. Carefull opening the wastegate the spring is under pressure inside so dont just stand there undoing the bolts and let it fly into your face
