Well i just got done putting in my semi built d16. Put some eagle h beam rods and some je srp pistons in it. Juts got it back on the road and running tonight and beginning the break in process. Now im familair with breaking in small engines ( 4 wheelers dirtbikes etc.) but never a car engine. What processes did you use to break in your motor? I did do a search on it but just read alot of "i heard" type of posts, id really like to hear from people who have built a motor and broken it in.

this is not personal experience but i hear your supposed to run it in without your turbo to start and then bolt on you turbo setup! just 0.2 that might help

I suggest NA for the breakin period using Non-Detergent Oil. 500 miles should be plenty.

Factory turbo cars comes with the turbo already on when new, which to me suggests that they can be broken in with the turbo on.

no need to remove the turbo, but stay out of boost and under 3000rpms for like 300 miles. Then gradually introduce load and boost and raise your rpms 1000 rpms every 100miles until you reach you redline. Thats what I did an my car runs great...1 year after the rebuild

and i still took it easy for the first 250 miles...my compression is 195psi accross the board and leakdown of 4%
if u ask me... that method is great and will do it again if i had to

also, when u turn the engine for a first time, use new oil, start engine up until is fully warm , and the fan kicks twise, turn it off, change the oil, and then put some miles in it!!

let the car idle for 15 -20, change oil

take care around block couple times, 25 miles, change oil

take the car out . rev it in increments, 1k to 2k back down to 1, 1k to 3k back down to 1, 1k to 4k back down to 1, do this a couple times not going over 4500 rpms. when goign back down to 1, dont use your brake, let the engine slow itself down. this helps the rings seal.

take it home and change oil again. let it sit over night.

do this again the next day, but take it farther, say 6k , no need to WOT it there. just slowly take it to 6k.

try and drive this way for a day or 2. or about 100 - 200 miles

change oil agian. and you should be set. go beat the **** out of it with no more then 5psi of boost for 500 miles.

Im also bout to begin breaking in a freshly forged gsr. Why change the oil so much during the breaking in process. What about re-torqueing the headbolts after some miles. Any suggestions?

I drove my car very slow for 1500 miles. Stayed off the boost. Took it back to the shop who built the motor and they inspected everything then dyno tuned it. Runs perfect

changing your oil alot will insure you get all the metal shaving out of your engine.

new engines will have shavings from the metal rubbing. if you leave them in there it will score the walls, or other things.

magnetic oil drain plug works good on break ins.. $20 investement, superplug has a very and i mean very sgtrong magnent.

Well so far ive got 300 miles on it, the first 150 were all babied and stayed under 4500 rpms, did an oil change at 75 miles. I have gotten it into boost quite a few times and hit 8 psi, did a compression check today and the numbers were all in the 185 ballpark.

put it on a dyno and break it in..all my cars and buddys cars have been done this way and still run great..no oil useage and run smooth and make power.

its my beleif (kinda picked up by the feelings of some of the best engine builders in the world...Bergenholtz/Vince/Kubo/...ect)...to break in a motor how its going to be utilized.

Bergenholtz broke in one of their old B18s by hitting the revlimiter a couple times before a race!

If your gonna run turbo, you might as well break it in on boost. I would take it easy for the 1st 500 miles or so (stay under 5k), and then just beat on it after that.

Well if you have let it settle NA, then there is no reason to break it in after you slap on a turbo, its already done.

I am building my sohc too with forged pistons and rods and this is how my Break in will be done.

1. 1000 miles of break in with just the pistonsa nd Eagle rods..In other words im runing it NA for a lil while the pistons and rods get comfy in their new home.
2.I will use regular oil. Oil change at 500 miles.
3. When i reach 1000 miles its time to put in the turbo and change oil to Synthetic.
4. 500 more miles with everything installed.
5.Time to floor it like if its stolen :D
