Turbo EGT to high - no idea!!!
Hi, we have the following a car
Honda Civic B16A1 Engine
Garret GT28RS
Kinetics Header and 60mm downpipe
Compression Ratio 9,7:1
We are running a air fuel ratio of 11,5:1 on full throttle with the wideband. Our problem is, that the car has a EG temperature of about 880 degrees celcius. If we try to get the temperature down, doesnt matter what we do, it raises instead. Can someone explain me why it should go up if i take back ignition timing or make the AF lower (more fuel). Or if you put less fuel in and earlier ignition it raises of course also. doesnt matter what we try, the EGT is getting hotter every time. For information we are running 0,55bar which is about 8psi. even if you turn the ignition distributor itself towards "later" ignition or "earlier" ignition - the temperature is getting hotter up to 960°c. What is the problem here? Thanks people!!

960* would melt the pistons. Either the gauge is wrong or the timing is way too retarted with too much fuel. 11.5 AFR is not bad so I suspect the timing is too retarted. What is you total timing at 8 psi? Did you double check the base disti timing is @ 16*?
I had the same problem and it ended up being that my wideband (techedge) was getting some ground noise in the higher RPMs and giving me a false EGT reading. I used an external EGT amplifier and it fixed it.

EGTs do some weird things, but when timing is retarded too much it does cause you to have higher EGTs. This problem sounds like possibly not setting your base timing @ 16 degrees or possibly your EGT gauge is not calibrated properly. Do a search on EGTs, you find quite a bit of useful information for tuning.

Hey poeple, thanks for your help
you mean, i should set the standard timing on the ignition distributor on 16 degrees before the upper deathpoint (i hope you know what i mean cuz i dont know the right word in english - im german)?
I'm pretty sure the EGT-Module is working right, we use that one in a lot of different cars and it seems to work good!

960 degrees in the combustion chamber could do that, but the probe isn't in the combustion chamber now, is it? Hell, coat the piston domes, exhaust valve faces and exhaust ports with a ceramic thermal barrier coating and the EGT's would probably be even hotter, but the engine would be healthier no matter what the EGT gauge reads.

You are correct. What I was trying to infer was that 960* is probably not indicitave of the temperatures in the combustion chamber, rather the timing is too retarded and the flame front is being fired off in the exhaust manifold rather than in the combustion chamber.
You will obviously need a timing light to set the distributor timing. There is a mark (forget if it is the white or red one) on the crank pully that is set at 16* advance. This mark should line up with the mark on the timing belt cover when you look at it with a timing light. Do a search and you'll find more detailed proceedures.
