Re: Turbo civic falls off dyno
if you watch the video you can see that it is strapped down.
looks like strapped failed after the car dropped from lifting. if you look close you can see the end of the strap pull out of the ratchet after it failed. prolly just an old ratchet with worn teeth.

looks like the strap pulled through. but my question is why only 1 strap? i know a second strap on the from the other side wouldnt have helped this situation but still

Re: Turbo civic falls off dyno
Yep actual ratcheting mechanism broke....damn b16's making too much torque lol I was glad it didn't go to the right it would have hit the dyno operator among other things....I was nervous about what power it was going to make so when this happened I was just like wtf didn't expect that shoddy luck and no power reading!
There's 2 straps crossing each other....kinda hard to see the one.

I cant believe they were letting that many people stand that close to the dyno.. I always got pissed when people start crowding around the dyno.
it does remind me of the time at the shop i used to work at, i told the owner i need a new strap, one was frayed pretty bad. He said.. nah it'll be fine. I said cool so when the car goes flying off the dyno dont come bitching at me..
long story short, the car went flying off the dyno when the strap broke.

Yep, Dynapack is my choice. Much safer, no tire noise (can hear pinging better), repeatable, and no need to have a bunch of guys sitting on the hood or the trunk on high hp applications.

Re: Turbo civic falls off dyno
a shop in NY runs 4 straps in the front for insurance and two in the back, they tune 800whp civic so i would use the insurance aswell

No one was hurt I take it?
I had the pleasure of driving an AWD talon off the dyno sideways once...flexy dump tube the customer made moved and burned a front strap.

Re: Turbo civic falls off dyno
That must have been fun...I saw another civic come off just like mine from what you said.....thought had crossed my mind initially. Nobody got hurt luckily everyone got the hell out of the way but it could have easily knocked someone over not paying attention....reason everyone was crowded around like that was because it was a very well attended dyno meet arranged by a few local forums I think somewhere around 50 cars ran by the end of the night so it wasn't really professional and this is only the second one with yellow tape up. Next time just for my own comfort I will be putting it on a Dynapack because this has ended up costing me a few bucks because I had to replace that new front tire, front wheel bearings(need a press), an axle, and my ball joints just to be on the safe side.

I know the waiver probably cut the shop's liability to zero, but I certainly hope they hooked you up in some way.
It almost looked like they had no "wrap" around the wratchet's roller. No matter what I use them for, I *always* get at least 3-4 layers thick around it. Then I tie a big *** knot just beyond the wratchet onto the tight part using the slack.

Re: Turbo civic falls off dyno
I doubt the ratchet gave out.. Id bet money the exhaust/wastegate melted a strap as said above.
Me too !

Only car iirc that had 4 straps was a 700whp vette sometime after my car.
Nope you can see the strap come right out of the ratchet in the video, I also remember looking at the full length strap still attached to the underside once the smoke had settled.
