many motor combo's will yield you a fun fast car. price ranges will vary depending on the deals you find and how much of the work you can do yourself. i've decided a vitara d16 makes most sense for what i'm trying to accomplish, so that's what i'm going to do. no one setup is the best for everyone.

If I had to do it all over all again, F22A6 w/boost. A bit of work to get it into this particular frame, but not done very often and every build I have seen has made good trq. numbers. This is coming from somebody who ran 12s in a CRX with a stock B20 turbo motor.

As for the OP, I don't believe you are actually going to buy/build anything, so I'm not going to bother answering. I will say your friend is stuck in 1997 with his opinions though.

dd your hatch, fix the issues with your $10,000 prelude and boost that how bout. if you have problems with h23s, throw in an h22 or an f.

Ok so i have done alot of turbo builds with stock motors and try to get the more bang for your buck kinda thing and i have found that any motor you get for your car is going to be fine with one crucial thing.
1 tuning tuning tuning
if you find a good tuner and knows about the motor you will be useing witch ever you decide to use you wont have problems the thing i always loved is there is always more rook to grow with a turbo car. well this is just my info from my experince.
if you dont agree i would like to hear your reason why and what not

Depends on your budget. I have seen ls-vtec's run good but a GSR comes with oil squirters and a crank girdle

Re: Turbo Build - What motor to choose - crx or hatch
Ok new question. just spoke with an old friend who used to have a nice eg hatch but has been out of hondas for a while.
He recommended the B18B1 Non-Vtec motor, because it loves boost (stock) and loves boost even more if its fully built, compared to other fully built motor types... and he hates vtec.. says with a boosted application, vtec isn't as good and the motor wont last as long.. vtec is more for all motor setups.. which i agree its a helpful addition for all motor...
Is this true?

If you want reliable power, go with the b16 or the f20b. R/S ratio factors in a lot (1.74 b16, 1.69 f20b). If you like the LS/VTEC idea, slap the h22a head you have on the f20b block. With very little mods & a GOOD tuner, you'll get 400hp no problem.
