Turbine housing swap
Hey guys, anyone know if you can swap out a turbine housing for a t3/t4 turbo? I have a Turbonetics .63 stage III 54 trim and I want to change the turbine housing to a 3" V-band. How does one find out which housings fit? Would something like this work? https://www.ebay.com/itm/Turbine-Hou...sfK:rk:18:pf:0
Reason is some of the bolts on the downpipe are seized and I also found a 3" V-band downpipe I want to use. Would heat work for removing the stubborn bolts? |
Re: Turbine housing swap
You will ideally want to get a Turbonetics turbine housing to match the wheel size, profile, and diffuser

Re: Turbine housing swap
Thanks I see now there's turbonetics housings for sale. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/t...9-62/overview/
https://turboneticsinc.com/store/ind...h=93_80&page=4 I'm still confused on how to match it up. Do I match up the A/R? From my understanding a smaller a/r will have faster spool but less top end while a higher a/r will have more top end but be more laggy. So with that said doesn't this let you pick and choose? Mine is .63 so do I just pick out a .63? As long it's a t3 with 4 bolt flange then you can choose 5 bolt, v-band, 4 bolt outlet? Turbonetics website is pretty vague with no descriptions. Profile and diffuser are new terms to me! |
Re: Turbine housing swap
What size turbine wheel is in the turbo you currently have? If you are uncertain then you can look at the T3 flange where it meets the manifold, on the surface there may be a number etched that will be XXXXX-57. That"57" is the turbine wheel size. That needs to be matched. If your turbo is less than say, 10 years old then it will have the F1 style turbine wheel in it. .

Hard to see. But it says 0558 03

Re: Turbine housing swap
That is their older turbine wheel/housing. The F1 wheel (current) housings offered fit slightly different. I actually have 3 of those sitting here in 5 bolt.

Re: Turbine housing swap
Yes. Otherwise any Garrett T31 4-bolt Stage III turbine housing could also work.

Re: Turbine housing swap
Wow so I found this: T31 Exhaust housing for StageIII (76 trim) turbine wheel : atpturbo.com
Is that it? Is stage III a 76 trim? Would a .48 a/r work in my application? I want better spool. Is there a chart that shows spool times and max hp for each ar size? |

Re: Turbine housing swap
I have a stock b18a block with b16 head/gsr cams. It's only for street driving with goals of good mpg for normal driving and power up top. Will only occasionally drag just to get times :) Max rpm stock rev limit of 7200.
So i know you don't want too small a turbo because it will boost at low rpm which will drop mpg. Too big of a turbo will spool too late. Here's my dyno graph. A couple things. That day the wastegate flange was leaking as the RTV I had on it blew out, so that could've made the spool slower I'm hypothesizing. Also the plugs weren't gapped on that day and it was misfiring at max boost, 14psi. Later I would tighten the gaps alot and it ran perfect. I still don't know how it got these numbers when it was misfiring. This is on e85. I'm going back to 93 because I'm only getting 20 mpg and finding stations is proving to be a chore. With 93 I could get around 30 mpg. Also I believe we stopped at 14 psi I think because of the wastegate spring. I think it's a 7 pound spring. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/honda-t...33a3113e50.jpg |
Re: Turbine housing swap
You're fine with .63A/R. B- SERIES with a VTEC head needs that .63A/R. Don't bother with the .48A/R.

Just curious do you know about the TX-60-62?
https://www.amazon.com/TX-60-62-Charger-exhaust-Flange-300-550/dp/B013FIADNM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1547947456&sr=8-1&keywords=tx-60-62
I can't seem to find much info on it other than the reviews which were pretty good but the dude had a k20. Will this be too large for my B series? I know REV9 is a cheap ebay brand but some people have been having success such as boostedbois on youtube with ebay turbos. And if it lasts me a couple years thats fine with me lol. The wheel seems to have been balanced and you can see the colored markers on them. Do I judge the spool by the a/r? This one is a .65. It seems a little larger than my turbo so it will probably be more laggy. I want to use this downpipe 3" V-BAND STAINLESS STEEL Turbo Downpipe Performance Racing Products for International Sales from SSAutochrome Inc. . SSautochrome, I know flame suit on. LOL but hey a pipe is a pipe right? And its stainless The pics show it fits perfect and with A/C which I need. |
